My Impression of Ghost Stories from Japan (ENG/SPA)
Hello, Internet folks, how's it going? Today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite books, ‘Ghost Stories of Japan’ reworked by Lafcadio Hearn and illustrated (let's give him a standing ovation) by Benjamin Lacombe, my favourite illustrator :3

The best thing about the books illustrated by this artist is that, in addition to the good stories, the drawings obviously have a strong presence and the illustrations are tremendously beautiful (it's no wonder his books are so expensive, haha).
Lo mejor de los libros ilustrados por este artista es que, además de las buenas historias, los dibujos tienen mucha presencia obviamente y las ilustraciones son tremendamente hermosas (no por nada sus libros son bien costosos jeje)
This book is a collection of horror stories inspired by Japanese folklore. Reading the book, one might expect it to contain some analogue horror, but no, I actually find it all very artistic, and besides, the era didn't allow for it (analogue horror is very recent) and the author is from around 1900 (or died around that time), so the stories are more from the Japanese point of view, where these Yokai (translated as demons, although not in the same sense as in Catholicism, for example) are very important, coexisting with humans, intermingled with nature or the everyday life of the Japanese.
Este libro es un compendio de cuentos de terror inspirados en el folklore japonés. Leyendo el libro podría esperarse que contuviera algo de terror analógico, pero no, la verdad siento todo muy artístico y es que además la época no la daba (el terror analógico es muy reciente) y el autor es de 1900 algo (o murió en esa fecha) así que las historias van más desde el punto de vista de Japón donde estos Yokai (traducidos como demonios, aunque no es en el mismo sentido que en el catolicismo por ejemplo) toman mucha importancia, una especie de coexistencia con los humanos, entremezclados con la naturaleza o la cotidianidad de los japoneses
For me, the correct translation (at least in terms of the definition itself and not the literal translation of the word) would be ‘Entities’ since they are supernatural beings, some good, some evil, and others neither good nor evil but simply pragmatic, and this is what the book shows us. It shows the naturalness of some Yokai, not with the intention of placing them in a certain position (good or evil), but simply tells the story, showing what these protagonists of each story are like and letting the viewer decide what to think about these entities.
Para mi la traducción correcta (al menos en cuanto a la definición en sí misma y no a la traducción literal de la palabra) sería "Entidades" ya que son seres sobrenaturales, algunos buenos, otros malos y otros ni buenos ni malos sino simplemente pragmáticos y esto es lo que nos muestra el libro. Muestra la naturalidad de algunos Yokai no con un intensión de ponerlos sobre una postura (buenos o malos) sino simplemente cuenta la historia mostrado como son estos protagonistas de cada historia y que e espectador mismo elija que pensar sobre estas entidades
And how can we not mention Benjamin's illustrative work? It is sublime, with a very distinctive style (somewhat reminiscent of Tim Burton). As soon as you see one of Benjamin's illustrations, you know it is his, regardless of the context of the illustration or the colour palette. They always look a little melancholic (part of his signature style). In addition, he can use different techniques and materials in a single illustration, such as watercolours, oils, wax crayons, colours, graphics, cut paper, etc. In fact, what makes the book so expensive is that it is made entirely of coated paper, in addition to all the illustrator's craftsmanship and artistic work. However, it is definitely worth it, as art should be supported. The stories are quite good, and even better if we can enjoy them with beautiful illustrations.
Y como no hablar del trabajo ilustrativo de Benjamin, es excelso, tiene un sello en la forma de dibujo muy propio (algo así como Tim Burton) apenas vez una ilustración de Benjamin sabes que es suya, sin importar el contexto de la ilustración o la paleta de colores, siempre se ven un poco melancólicos (parte de su sello) además que en una sola ilustración puede utilizar diferente técnicas y materiales, acuarelas, oleo, creyones de cera, colores, grafico, papel picado, ect y de hecho lo que encarece el libro es que todo está hecho de papel couché además de todo el trabajo artesanal y artístico del ilustrador; si embargo, vale la pena definitivamente ya que precisamente hay que apoyar el arte. Las historias son bastante buenas y mejor aún si podemos disfrutarlas con ilustraciones preciosas

Se ven preciosas las ilustraciones, me encantaría leer el libro además porque siempre he sentido curiosidad por el folclore japonés, hay Yokais que de verdad llegan a dar mucho miedo, pero así como dices hay otros que no son malos.

Yes, I have a couple of illustrated books by Lacombe at home and I also visited his art exhibition in Lucca some years ago (fantastic pieces of art!).
I plan to collect them all, they are absolutely beautiful
