My Idol [Personal Opinion] ESP/ENG
Hello, hello internet people! How are you all doing? I watched a K-drama that I really enjoyed because it's about the Korean entertainment industry 😍, but not just any entertainment industry—it focuses on the dark side of it all. This K-drama is none other than My Idol, which in Korean is "Idol I," and when you read it, it sounds very similar to "Idol Eye," an analogy or symbol of the constant scrutiny of idols.
¡Hola, Hola gente de internet! ¿Todo bien? Vi un K-drama que me gustó mucho ya que trata sobre el mundo del entretenimiento coreano 😍, pero no cualquiera sino el lado oscuro de todo esto. Este k-drama no es nada menos que My Idol, en coreano "Idol I" que al leerlo suena muy parecido a "Idol Eye", lo que es una analogía o simbolismo de los ojos que están puestos sobre los idols todo el tiempo.
The story tells of Se-na, a brilliant lawyer famous for winning incredibly difficult cases, but secretly a huge fan of the Gold Boys, an alternative pop band. Her favorite is Do La Ik, the band's lead singer, but what no one knows, not even her, is the difficult time this idol is going through due to overwhelming fame and fans who disregard boundaries (called sasaengs in Korea). This has led him to suffer panic attacks and seek professional help. Their paths cross one morning when Se-na wakes up to a news report that her favorite has been accused of murdering his best friend in the band, prompting Se-na to step in as his defense attorney.
La historia nos habla de Se-na, una abogada excelsa y famosa por ganar casos muy difíciles, pero en secreto ella es fan de los Gold Boys, una banda de pop alternativo, su favorito es Do La Ik, el vocalista de la banda, pero lo que nadie sabe, ni siquiera ella, es los momentos difíciles que está pasando este idol por causa de la fama abrumadora y los fans que no respetan limites (llamados Sasaengs en Corea) lo que lo llevó a tener ataques de pánico y a buscar ayuda profesional. Sus caminos se cruzan cuando una mañana Se-na se despierta y ve las noticias donde su favorito es acusado de haber asesinado a su mejor amigo de la banda, lo que hace que Se-na se presente como su abogada defensora.

I have to say I gave a standing ovation to everyone involved in the series. In Korea, there was a huge backlash from people (most likely sasaengs) who disagreed with the series. They claimed it misrepresented K-pop fans and exaggerated situations, but I think what we see is simply a reflection of the reality many idols experience in real life: accidents, harassment, attempted murder—these are just some of the things fans have done to idols. There was even a reported case of a girl giving a K-pop singer yogurt laced with glue once.
Tengo que decir que aplaudí de pie a los involucrados en la serie. En corea hubo un revuelo de gente (Sasaengs muy probablemente) que no estaban de acuerdo con la serie. Ellas alegaban que esta retrataba mal a las fans del kpop y que la serie exageraba situaciones, pero yo opino que lo que vemos no es más que la muestra de realidad que viven muchos Idols en la vida real: accidentes, acoso, intentos de asesinato, todas estas son algunas de las cosas que los "fans" han provocado a algunos ídols, incluso hubo un caso reportado de una chica que le dio un yogur adulterado con pegamento a un cantante de K Pop una vez.
Many of these people think that the idols in question belong to them, and if they don't do what those "fans" want, then they automatically stop being "fans" and go over to the side of the haters, even inventing rumors or feeding others, and that is in fact what constantly happens to Like (the protagonist) in the series.
Muchas de estas personas piensas que los idols en cuestión les pertenecen, y si ellos no hacen lo que esos "fans" quieren entonces automáticamente dejan de ser "fan" y se pasan al lado de los haters, incluso inventando rumores o alimentando otros, y es de hecho lo que constantemente le pasa a Like (el protagonista) en la serie.
It also shows us how the yellow press operates and the damage they do with their false or out-of-context articles, fueling the hatred of these supposed fans.
También nos muestra como actúa la prensa amarillista y el daño que hacen con sus artículos falsos o sacados de contexto, alimentando el odio de estos supuestos fans.
We even have an example of how corruption, money, or personal interests can affect and destroy the lives of others (I won't go into more detail to avoid spoilers in case you want to watch the series 😊)

The acting, as is customary in Korea, is a 10 out of 10. Everyone involved really gets into character, making everything more realistic. For example, in real life, the male lead is an actor, not an idol (i.e., a well-rounded artist), but you could easily believe he is an idol. Meanwhile, the female lead is an idol in real life, but you can identify with her character as a K-pop fan. 😄
Las actuaciones como es costumbre en Corea, son un 10 de 10, cada uno de los involucrados se mete en la piel de su personaje y hace todo mas realista, por ejemplo en la vida real el protagonista es actor, no Idol (es decir un artista integral) pero uno podría creer que en efecto es un idol, mientras que la protagonista femenina si que es una idol en ela vida real, pero te puedes identificar con su personaje como fan del kpop 😄
The story is captivating, although it has its slow moments, especially in the development of the protagonists' love story. Even though it's a crime drama, there's romance, but it's very well done. Most of the plot revolves around who the real killer is and why they wanted to involve Like in everything. The series does a good job of showing us several possible suspects who seem to be the killer in the end, but then the story takes a turn and it turns out it's not them, but someone else. However, something else then makes you doubt and reconsider the first suspect. I think they handled it very well.
La historia es atrapante aunque tiene sus lapsos planos, más que todo en el desarrollo de la historia de amor de los protagonistas, porque aunque sea un drama de crimen también hay romance, pero aun así está muy bien trabajado, la mayoría de la trama gira en torno a quien es el asesino verdadero y porqué quiso involucrar a like en todo. La serie hace bien su trabajo al mostrarnos varios posibles sospechosos que parecen ser el asesino a fin de cuentas, pero luego la historia vira y resulta que no son estos sino que puede ser alguien mas, sin embargo después alguna otra cosa te hace dudar y pensar de nuevo en el primer sospechoso. creo que manejaron estoy muuuy bien.
I quite like the soundtrack, although, given that the protagonist is a famous idol, I would have liked to see more songs from the Gold Boys or from Like as a solo artist. I think we only had a couple of scenes of him singing; I think it would have added more weight to include more scenes where the songs were featured.
El soundtrack me gusta bastante, aunque tratándose el protagonista de ser un idol famoso, me hubiese gustado que hubiese mas canciones de los Gold boys o de like como solista, creo que solo tuvimos un par de escenas de él cantando, creo que le hubiese dado mas peso poner mas escenas donde las canciones estuvieran presentes.
Cinematography/Fotografía
It has very beautiful shots, and a generally friendly color palette (pastel tones but warm at the same time) except obviously for the dark suspenseful or dramatic scenes.
Tiene planos muy bonitos, y una paleta de colores por lo general amigables (tonos pasteles pero cálidos a la vez) a excepción obviamente de las escenas oscuras de suspense o dramáticas.
I have to say, I absolutely loved the character development. The protagonist, Se-na, is a total K-pop fan. She's always on top of her favorite group, streaming their songs, buying their merchandise, and listening to their music constantly. She idealizes Like, her bias, so much that when she finally meets him in person, she can't help but relive that moment over and over. It's not until Like is implicated in a murder and she becomes his lawyer that she truly begins to get to know him and stop idealizing him, discovering that he's a normal human being with fears, anxieties, and sadness, not just "happiness" and glamour. Despite believing she's in love with him, she realizes it was all just idealization, and little by little, she prioritizes Like's safety and well-being, even giving him space when he wants to distance himself. This shows that Se-na went from idealizing him to genuinely loving him.
Tengo que decir que me gustó muchísimo el desarrollo de personajes. La protagonista Se-na es una fan total de kpop, está al pendiente de su grupo preferido y hace stream de las canciones, compra sus productos y oye sus canciones todo el tiempo, idealiza a Like, su bias (favorito) tanto asi que cuando lo conoce en persona no puede evitar ensoñarse con ese momento una y otra vez, no es hasta que Like es involucrado en un asesinato y ella se presenta como su abogado que empieza a conocerlo realmente y a dejar de idealizarlo para descubrir que es un ser humano normal, con miedos, angustias, tristezas y no solo "felicidad" y glamour. Pese a creer estar enamorada de el se da cuenta que realmente era una idealización y poco a poco prioriza la seguridad y el bienestar de Like, procurando incluso darle su espacio cuando el quiere alejarse, esto demuestra que Se-na pasó de idealizarlo a amarlo sinceramente.
On the other hand, Like is shown to us as a capricious star who mistreats everyone and is always in a bad mood, hiding with this attitude his anxiety and panic attacks, his deep sadness and his childhood traumas.
Por otro lado, Like se nos muestra como una estrella caprichosa que maltrata a todos y se la pasa de mal humor, escondiendo con esta actitud sus ataques de ansiedad y pánico, su profunda tristeza y sus traumas de la niñez.
When he is implicated in the murder of his best friend, he completely loses his way, he can no longer stay afloat and it is Se-na (his fan, although he doesn't know it) who shows him the way, always being there for him, not only as his lawyer but also as his friend, this makes him gradually develop feelings for her and although he confesses it to her, she decides to take some time to figure out if what she feels for him is fan infatuation or genuine love.
Cuando es involucrado en el asesinato de su mejor amigo, él pierde totalmente el rumbo, ya no puede mantenerse a flote y es Se-na (su fan, aunque el no lo sabe) quien le muestra el camino, siempre estando ahí para él, no solo como su abogada sino también como su amiga, eso hace que poco a poco él desarrolle sentimientos por ella y aunque él se lo confiesa, ella decide darse un tiempo para dilucidar si lo que siente por él es enamoramiento de fan o amor genuino.
I also liked Se-na's best friend; he's the comic relief of the series. Although I didn't like the cliché of him being in love with her (as if friendships between men and women didn't exist), I liked that he was at least unconditionally there for her, to the point of accepting, even with jealousy, a "like" in her life, because he knows that he's a good man who will take care of her in his absence.
El mejor amigo de Se-na también me agradó, él es el alivio cómico de la serie aunque no me gustó el cliché de que estuviese enamorado de ella (como si no existieran amistades entre hombre y mujeres) me gustó que al menos fuese incondicional con ella al punto de aceptar, aun con celos, a like en la vida de ella, porque sabe que es un buen hombre que cuidara de ella en su ausencia.
I also really liked the prosecutor's storyline, as he's a young man trapped by his father's decisions, having grown up in his shadow, trying to fulfill everyone's expectations, even if it meant putting innocent people in jail just to prove his point. This makes him question whether he's really doing the right thing. It's not until after Se-na's final words (who has known him since they were teenagers) that he reconsiders and does his job properly, ignoring his father's protests and criticisms to then forge his own path.
La trama del fiscal también me gustó mucho, ya que es un joven atrapado en las decisiones de su padre, creció a la sombra de él, intentando cumplir lo que todos esperaban de él, aunque eso significara llevar a la cárcel a inocentes, solo por probar su punto, lo que le hace cuestionarse si realmente está haciendo o no lo correcto, no es hasta después de las palabras finales de Se-na (que lo conoce desde que era adolescentes) que él recapacita y hace su trabajo correctamente, ignorando las protestas y criticas de su padre para entonces hacer su propio camino.
There's a lot to say about this series, but the truth is I loved it so much. It's been a while since I've seen a series I liked this much; I enjoyed it from beginning to end 🤗 😍
Hay mucho que decir de esta serie pero la verdad es que me gustó muchísimo, hace bastante no veía una serie que me gustara tanto, la disfrute de principio a fin 🤗 😍
