Little Womens Review [ESP/ENG]
Hello everyone! How are you? A long time ago, I had the chance to see this story in its film version, and I liked it so much that I decided to read the book because I know the original is obviously much better. That's how I immersed myself in the story of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, the March sisters, who, along with their mother, have to survive together and cope with every challenge of their daily lives while their father fights on the front lines of the American Civil War. Throughout the story, the sisters experience love, face many challenges such as financial hardship (a result of the conflicts the country is going through), but they strengthen their family bonds, learning valuable life lessons that highlight loyalty, nobility, and sisterhood.

Hace mucho tiempo tuve la oportunidad de ver esta historia en su versión cinematográfica y me gustó tanto que me propuse leer el libro porque sé que obviamente el producto original es mucho mejor, fue así como me sumergí en la historia de Meg, Jo, Beth y Amy, las hermanas March, las cuales junto a su madre tienen que sobrevivir juntas y sobrellevar cada desafío tanto de su vida cotidiana como diario, mientras su padre lucha en el frente de batalla de la Guerra Civil estadounidense. A lo largo de la trama las hermanas conocen el amor, se enfrentan a muchos retos como dificultades económicas (producto de los conflictos por los que atraviesa el país) pero van reforzando sus lazos familiares, aprendiendo valiosas lecciones de vida en las que destaca la lealtad, la nobleza y la hermandad.
Each of the sisters is different, so it's very easy to find qualities or even flaws that you can identify with. In my case, my favorite character by far is Jo, who is a girl ahead of her time, since she doesn't think of marriage as the only option for a woman. Jo is a dreamy and free-spirited young woman; she wants to be a writer and doesn't let difficulties overshadow her dreams, but at the same time, she always thinks of others before herself. She is very protective of her sisters, although her most prominent flaw is impulsiveness.
Cada una de las hermanas es distinta, por eso es muy fácil hallar cualidades o incluso defectos con los que te puedes identificar, en mi caso mi personaje preferido por mucho es Jo, quien es una chica adelantada a su época, ya que no piensa en el matrimonio como la única opción para una mujer, Jo es una jovencita soñadora y libre, quiere ser escritora y no deja que las dificultades opaquen sus sueños, pero al mismo tiempo siempre piensa en los demás antes que en ella, es muy protectora con sus hermanas aunque su defecto más destacado es la impulsividad.
The book primarily deals with the transition to adulthood (something that isn't easy, but even less so in that era amidst major conflicts like a civil war). In each chapter, we see how the characters evolve, leaving behind old attitudes to face life responsibly. But what I love is that Louisa May Alcott, like Jane Austen in her novels, highlights the struggle between the feminine ideal of the time and her own aspirations. All of this serves as a critique (very daring for its time) of gender roles. For example, everyone expected Jo to marry and start a family because that's how it had always been, and she didn't see anything wrong with it (and neither do I 😄). But without a doubt, she aspired to something more than that. She had her own dreams; she didn't let herself be swayed by what others expected of her. And it was a book written in 1868, not today, so this must have been somewhat scandalous, or at least the critics would have viewed it with some suspicion.
El libro nos habla principalmente de la transición hacia la adultez (algo que no es fácil pero mucho menos en aquella época en medio de conflictos importantes como lo es una guerra civil) en cada capítulo vemos como los personajes evolucionan, dejando atrás viejas actitudes para afrontar la vida con responsabilidad, pero algo que me encanta es que Louisa May Alcott, al igual que lo hizo Jane Austin en sus novelas, destaca la lucha entre el ideal femenino de la época y sus propias aspiraciones, todo esto como una crítica (muy osada para su tiempo) a los roles de género, por ejemplo todos esperaban que Jo se casara y formara una familia porque así había sido siempre, y ella no le veía nada de malo (y yo tampoco 😄) pero sin lugar a dudas aspiraba algo más que eso, ella tenía sus propios sueños, no se dejaba llevar por lo que otros esperaban de ella, y fue un libro escrito en 1868, no actualmente, así que esto debió ser de alguna manera un escándalo, o al menos la crítica lo verían con algo de recelo.
Another thing I really liked is that the author was very organic when writing each character, because she doesn't present them as perfect; on the contrary, they are very human, with their virtues and their flaws. In fact, some of the characters have more flaws than virtues, but throughout the plot we see them struggle with them and evolve in the process, achieving a very satisfying personal growth for the reader.
Otra cosa que me gustó muchísimo es que la autora fue muy orgánica a la hora de escribir a cada personaje, porque no los presenta como perfectos, al contrario, son muy humanos, con sus virtudes y sus defectos, de hecho algunos de los personajes tienen más defectos que virtudes, pero a lo largo de la trama los vemos luchar con ellos y evolucionar en el proceso, alcanzando una superación personal muy satisfactoria para el lector.
Although it's not a book that openly promotes feminism, it does give women a significant voice and relevance, inviting reflection on women's aspirations, dreams, and abilities. It demonstrates that beyond being wives and mothers, they also fought their own battles and could succeed on their own. And it's true, if there was anything positive about the civil war, and all wars throughout history, it's that despite all the devastation they caused, they gave women the opportunity to show what they were made of. In a world practically without men because almost all of them were fighting, they had to fend for themselves, make their own decisions, and take risks.
A pesar de que no es un libro que promueva abiertamente el feminismo, sí que le da mucha voz y relevancia a la mujer, invitando a la reflexión acerca de las aspiraciones femeninas, los sueños y aptitudes de las mujeres, es una forma de demostrar que más allá de ser esposas y madres ellas también libraban sus propias batallas, también podían salir adelante por su cuenta, y es cierto, si algo tuvo de positivo la guerra civil, y toda guerra en general que hubo a lo largo de la historia, es que a pesar de todos los estragos que causó, le dio la oportunidad a las mujeres de demostrar de qué estaban hechas, en un mundo prácticamente sin hombres porque casi todos estaban luchando, ellas debían salir adelante solas, decidir por si mismas y asumir riesgos.
I won't deny that the book has its emotional moments where you might shed a tear and even think it's not fair, but it's really worth reading because it's BEAUTIFUL 😍 It talks about overcoming challenges, personal growth, and above all, the enormous importance of family.
No les voy a negar que el libro tiene sus momentos emotivos en los que a uno se le escapa alguna lágrima y hasta piensa que no es justo, pero realmente vale la pena leerlo porque es HERMOSO 😍 nos habla de superación de retos, de crecimiento personal y sobre todo de la enorme importancia que tiene la familia.
