Let´s Talk About Why Kpop is Taking Over the World (ENG/SPA)
Hello, internet people. Today I want to talk to you about a genre that, although it's dominating the world, is undervalued by some people outside the fandoms. I've heard people think that K-pop is only for teenagers or girls, when it's a musical genre like any other, and many songs are so good that people enjoy them even without knowing they're K-pop (like PSY's "Gamnan Style," for example), or "Cupid" by Rose, or "APT" by Bruno Mars.

Hoy quiero hablarles de un género que aunque está dominando al mundo está infravalorado por algunas personas ajenas a los fandoms, y es que he oído personas pensar que el kpop es solo para adolescentes o niñas, cuando es un género musical como cualquier otro y muchas canciones son tan buenas que la gente las disfruta aún sin saber que es kpop (como el gamnan style de PSY por ejemplo) o Cupid de nombre o APT de Rose con Bruno Mars.
Where did K-pop originate? Although there were already pop groups in Korea, K-pop, as we know it, was created by Lee So Man (owner of SM Entertainment), the first of the major entertainment companies. This visionary took inspiration from groups like Backstreet Boys and N Syncs and reorganized the formula to suit Korea, starting with the first generation of K-pop. However, it wasn't until the second generation that K-pop began to gain recognition outside of Korea.
¿De dónde nació el kpop? aunque ya habían grupos de pop en Corea, el Kpop, como lo conocemos, fue creado por Lee So Man (propietario de SM Entertaiment) la primera empresa de entretenimiento de las grandes. Este visionario tomo de referencia a grupos como BSB o N Sincs y reorganizó la fórmula para que se adaptará a Corea, empezando con la primera generación del kpop, pero no fue hasta la segunda generación que el kpop empezó a ser reconocido fuera de Corea.
Groups like TXQV and Super Junior made great contributions, for example the idea of the Lightstick (those light lamps with the group's logo that are taken to concerts) was Donghae's idea from Super Junior, but TXQV, who debuted first, were the first to materialize them.
Grupos como TXQV y Super Junior hicieron grandes aportes, por ejemplo la idea de los Ligthstick (esas lámparas de luces con el logo del grupo que se lleva a los conciertos) fue idea de Donghae de Súper Junior, pero TXQV que debutó primero, fueron los primeros en materializarlos.
Super Junior was the first group to go to America and implement what was called the Hallyu wave, since from that tour, more foreigners became interested in kpop, in addition some members of the group participated as OST of several k-dramas, making this entertainment known as well, causing dramas like Winter Sonata or Boys Over Flowers to become popular quickly.
Super Junior fue el primer grupo en ir a América e implementar lo que fue llamado la ola Hallyu, ya que a partir de esa gira, más extranjeros se interesaron por el kpop, además algunos miembros del grupo participaron como ost de varios k- dramas, haciendo que se conociera también este entretenimiento, haciendo que dramas como Sonata de Invierno o Boys Over Flowers se popularizaron rápidamente
We've reached the 3rd generation, and with it, BTS. These guys arrived with a different approach that quickly gained them popularity, especially globally (using English lyrics). Opinions are divided on this because, while K-pop already used English phrases or short sentences, BTS kept adding more and more English lyrics until they released songs like "Butter," which are literally all in English.
Llegamos a la 3era generación y con ella BTS. Estos chicos llegaron con una apuesta diferente que les hizo ganar popularidad rápidamente y más a nivel global (emplear letras en inglés) aquí hay opiniones divididas debido a que, si bien el kpop ya empleaba frases en inglés o pequeñas oraciones, BTS fue agregando cada vez más letras en inglés hasta sacar canciones como Butter que literalmente están todas en inglés.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it was the starting point for K-pop to become less defined and more like mainstream pop. However, in my personal opinion, I prefer their early songs, which felt fresh and distinct, while still retaining the characteristics that define the genre.
Eso no es precisamente malo pero sí fue el punto de partida para que el kpop se desdibujara y se pareciera más al pop global. Ahora bien, en mi opinión personal prefiero sus canciones de los inicios que se sentían frescas y distintas, sin dejar de lado las características que componen al género.
But regardless of whether the songs have more English than Korean, and so on, they undoubtedly made K-pop even more recognized with their freshness and dynamism. While groups like TXQV, Kara, Girls' Generation, and Super Junior paved the way for them, they took advantage of that and increased the genre's popularity.
Pero independiente de si las canciones tienen más inglés que coreano y etc, sin lugar a dudas hicieron que el kpop fuese aún más reconocido con frescura y dinamismo. Si bien grupos como TXQV, Kara, Grils Generation y Super Junior les pavimentaron el camino, ellos tomaron eso aprovechándolo y aumentando la fama del género.
Reaching the 4th generation, things moved even further away from K-pop. "K-pop doesn't sound like K-pop anymore" was the common phrase from people disappointed that their favorite musical genre was being lost.
Llegando a la 4ta generación la cosa fue alejándose más aún del kpop. "El kpop ya no suena a Kpop" era la frase común de las personas decepcionadas de que su género musical favorito se estuviese perdiendo
And that's when a new group (and current global exponents of the genre) appeared: Stray Kids. They arrived thanks to Bangchan, a trainee with seven years at the company, who chose the members of his group from the list of trainees selected for debut evaluation. He chose them one by one, starting with Seo Changbin and Han Jisung (with whom he had a group called 3racha, where he composed songs and performed raps). He chose them based on their skills to create a complete group capable of self-producing, producing their own music, lyrics, choreography, and so on.
Y es cuando aparece un nuevo grupo (y actuales exponentes del género a nivel global) Stray Kids llegó de la mano de Bangchan, un aprendiz con 7 años en la compañía, el cual eligió a los que serían los integrantes de su grupo de la lista de aprendices que estaban seleccionados para evaluación para debut. Uno a uno los escogió, empezando por Seo Changbin y Han Jisung (con los que tenía un grupo llamado 3racha con los que componía temas y hacían rap) los eligió en base a sus habilidades para tener un grupo completo capaz de auto producirse, que ellos mismos produjeran la música, las letras, las coreografías, etc.
After going through a survival program, they debuted together as a nine-member group, creating music that was completely unexpected. In Korean opinion, they were considered very "loud" because their songs featured loud sounds, aggressive raps, and challenging and powerful choreography. Even so, they remained true to their music and their vision, and today they are one of the most famous groups in the genre, alongside BTS, having achieved countless gold records.
Luego de pasar por un programa de supervivencia, lograron debutar todos juntos con 9 integrantes y hacer su música, la cual se salía por completo de lo esperado, en la opinión coreana ellos eran muy "ruidosos" ya que sus canciones tenían sonidos fuertes, raps agresivos y coreografía desafiantes y fuertes. Aún así siguieron fieles a su música y lo que querían hacer, lo que les gustaba hacer y en efecto hoy en día son el grupo más famoso del género junto a BTS logrando innumerables premios discos de oro.
Stray Kids also has excellent marketing strategies. For example, they don't have opening acts on their tours; instead, they have interactive games with Stays (their fans) where they play sing-alongs on screen, or the cameras suddenly focus on one or two fans to guide them through the choreography. They have birthday missions for their fans, which help them reach the top of social media charts, and they also organize contests. They record sketches and interviews to stay active. They also have the 2Kids Room, where two of the members talk about past experiences and anecdotes, which helps fans get to know them and the members themselves better.
Stray kids además tiene estrategias de marketing muy buenas, por ejemplo no llevan teloneros a sus giras, sino que tienen juegos interactivos con Stay (sus fans) dónde en la pantalla las ponen a cantar las canciones del grupo en sing alone o las cámaras enfocan a una o dos fans sorpresivamente para que sigan la coreografía. Tienen misiones de cumpleaños para sus fans con las que logran posicionarse en los primeros puestos en redes sociales, también hacen dinámicas. Graban contenido de scketch y entrevistas para mantenerse activos siempre. También tienen los 2kids Room donde dos de los miembros se ponen a platicar de cosas del pasado de anécdotas y eso ayuda a las fans a conocerlos mejor y a ellos mismos.
Ultimately, every new Stray Kids release is a hit, and K-pop is becoming increasingly well-known thanks to groups like these, some of which set precedents and others globalized the genre in different ways, until absolutely no one is unaware, at least in simple definition, of what K-pop is.
En definitiva cada nuevo material de Stray Kids es un hit y el kpop se hace cada vez más conocido gracias a grupos como estos, los cuales algunos sembraron precedentes y otros globalizaron el género de distintos modos, hasta que absolutamente nadie desconoce, al menos en definición simple, que es el kpop.
Furthermore, the most recent Kpop film "Damon Hunters" also helped to further popularize the genre among the youngest, a movement that has been necessary because parents will have to know the genre if their children like it.
Además también la más reciente película Kpop "Damon Hunters" ayudó aún más a popularizar el género entre los más pequeños, un movimiento que ha estado porque si o si los padres tendrán que conocer el género si a sus hijos les gusta.
The film masterfully blends Korean folklore with K-pop. It's enjoyable for any K-pop fan, who will recognize references to the genre such as comebacks (new music releases), Lightsticks, repetitive streams, album signings, and more. Even those who aren't fans can learn a bit more about this world.
La película combina el folklore coreano con el kpop y lo hace de manera excelsa. La película es disfrutable para todo fan del kpop ya que reconocerá guiños al género como los comeback (material discográfico nuevo) los Ligthstick, los streams repetitivos, las firmas de discos etc y a quien no es fan, le sirve para conocer un poco mas de este mundillo.
Huntrix's song Golden has been number 1, as has Soda Pop by the Saja Boys, and overall the entire soundtrack is very good.
La canción Golden de Huntrix ha sido número 1 al igual que Soda Pop de los Saja Boys y en general todo el soundtrack es muy bueno.
Currently, the kpop generation is in its 5th generation, with groups like All Day or Le Seraffines, but this generation has been criticized because they prioritize dancing more than singing, so when they do a live performance they run out of breath or sing off-key, among other details that make them not as loved as their predecessors from previous generations.
Actualmente la generación de kpop va por la 5ta, con grupos como All Day o Le Seraffines, pero se ha estado criticando a esta generación debido a que priorizan más bailar que cantar, así pues cuando hacen una presentación en vivo se quedan sin aire o desafinan, entre otros detalles que hace que no sean tan queridos como sus predecesores de generaciones anteriores.
Super Junior performed at the MAMAS Awards, but the backing audio failed, forcing them to sing without breaks and without losing the rhythm of the choreography. Without running out of breath or singing out of tune, they gave a spectacular performance, worthy of the only second-generation group still active after a 20-year career.
Super Junior estuvo en los MAMAS Awars y les falló el audio de apoyo, lo que los obligó a cantar sin descansos y sin perder el ritmo de la coreografía, sin falta de aire, sin desafinar, hicieron una presentación espectacular, digna de el único grupo de 2da generación aun activo después de 20 años de carrera artística.
Without a doubt, K-pop is here to stay globally and is one of the best genres I've ever heard (depending on the individual group, of course), with Super Junior and Stray Kids being my favorites 😍
Sin lugar a dudas el kpop llegó para quedarse a nivel global y es uno de los mejores géneros que he escuchado (dependiendo también de las diferencias de cada grupo) siendo Súper Junior y Stray Kids mis favoritos 😍

Great post, @bethyjade very easy to read and well explained. I liked how you broke down the generations and showed how K-pop evolved without losing its impact. Even for non-fans, this gives a really clear perspective on why the genre is so global today.
