Book Review "Pride and Prejuice" (ESP/ENG)
Hello, hello, internet people! How are you? I already knew this story through the film versions that exist, and I even saw a very good Brazilian series based on several of Jane Austen's works, including this one, but it was only recently that I had the opportunity to read Pride and Prejudice 😍 and the experience is truly completely different, better in every sense of the word, because of course, when these stories are adapted for film or television, many important details are left out. But what is it about? Some of you who have not had the pleasure of reading this book may be wondering.

Yo ya conocía esta historia mediante las versiones cinematográficas que hay, incluso en una ocasión vi una serie brasileña muy buena que está basada en varias obras de Jane Austen en la que desde luego esta está incluida, pero recientemente fue que tuve la oportunidad de leer Orgullo y Prejuicio 😍 y de verdad que la experiencia es completamente diferente, mejor en toda la extensión de esa palabra, porque claro, por supuesto que cuando estas historias se llevan al cine o a la televisión hay muchos detalles importantes que quedan por fuera, pero ¿De qué se trata? podrían estar preguntándose algunos de ustedes que no hayan tenido el placer de leer este libro.
Back in the mid-19th century, there were many conventions and social rules that everyone had to follow, but especially for women, the golden rule was to marry a man who could provide everything the family needed 😩 and, of course, to bear children so that the family could continue. It is therefore logical that Mrs. Bennet was always on the lookout for good suitors for her daughters, but everything seems to indicate that one of them would not be able to marry, as Elizabeth Bennet was not obsessed with the idea of finding a husband. She sought other qualities in her potential suitors, qualities that went beyond simply being a provider. This is how she meets Mr. Darcy, a handsome, elegant, and above all selective man who, upon realizing Mrs. Bennet's intentions, completely dismisses the entire family, judging them harshly. Inevitably, something develops between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, but it seems that the conventions of the time will make it very difficult for that “something” to evolve into something more meaningful, or perhaps not 😏.
Por allá a mediados del siglo XIX había muchos convencionalismos y reglas sociales que todos debían seguir, pero en especial las mujeres, la regla de oro era casarse con un hombre que pudiera proveer todo lo que la familia necesitara 😩 y desde luego engendrar hijos para que esa familia pudiera trascender, de esta manera es lógico que la señora Bennet siempre estuviese al acecho de buenos pretendientes para sus hijas, pero todo parece indicar que una de ellas no podría casarse, ya que Elizabeth Bennet no estaba obsesionada con la idea de conseguir un marido, al ella menos buscaba otros intereses en sus posibles pretendientes, que fuesen algo más que un simple proveedor, de esta manera conoce al señor Darcy, un hombre guapo, elegante y sobre todo selectivo, que al darse cuenta de las intenciones de la señora Bennet desestima por completo a toda la familia, juzgándolos mal. Inevitablemente algo surge entre Elizabeth y el señor Darcy, pero tal parece que los convencionalismos de la época harán que sea muy difícil que ese "algo" pueda evolucionar en algo más trascendental, o tal vez no 😏
If there is one thing I loved about this book, it is that Elizabeth is a very different protagonist from those we normally find in books from this romanticized era. She does not idealize the man she is attracted to; on the contrary, she is able to see all his flaws, and it is precisely this that keeps her away from him. I would even dare to say that this novel is something like an early version of “Enemies to Lovers.” Perhaps Austen was a pioneer in this regard. The fact is that it is precisely this tension between the main characters that makes this story so appealing. Things do not happen by magic. The relationship between William Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is an evolutionary process that sets it apart from the other characters.
Si hay algo que amé de este libro es que Elizabeth es una protagonista muy diferentes a las que normalmente encontramos en libros de esta época tan romantizada, ella no idealiza al hombre por el que se siente atraída, al contrario, es capaz de ver en él todos sus defectos, y es precisamente esto lo que la mantiene alejada de él. Incluso yo me atrevería a decir que esta novela es algo así como una primera versión de "Enemies to Lovers" tal ves Austen fue pionera en esto, el caso es que es precisamente esa tensión entre los personajes principales la que hace que esta historia sea tan atractiva. Las cosas no suceden por arte de magia, la relación entre William Darcy y Elizabeth Bennet es un proceso evolutivo que marca la diferencia con respecto a los demás personajes.
I also love that Elizabeth is so different from other women of her time and environment. Her ideals are different and very ahead of her time because her father had a lot of influence on her education. He taught her to think differently, and this makes me think that maybe she is a “Mary Sue” character, one of those characters who closely resemble the author of the book. because when I read about Jane Austen, I learned that her father had given her an education that was normally given to young men at that time, which made this girl different, one step ahead of the girls of her age and era, who were normally educated to look beautiful and be good housewives.
Además me encanta que Elizabeth sea tan diferente a las demás mujeres de su época y su entorno, sus ideales son diferentes y muy adelantados a su época porque su padre tuvo mucha influencia en su educación, él la enseñó a pensar distinto, y esto me hace pensar que tal vez este es un personaje "Mary Sue" osea uno de esos personajes que se parecen mucho al autor del libro, porque leyendo cosas sobre Jane Austen supe que su padre le había dado una educación que normalmente le daban en esa época a jóvenes varones, lo cuál provocó que esta chica fuese diferente, que estuviese un paso más adelantada a las chicas de su edad y su época, normalmente educadas para lucir hermosas y ser buenas amas de casa.
Another element that I must take into account is the evolution of the characters, especially Mr. Darcy, who went from being an arrogant and annoying guy, incapable of seeing beyond a person's appearance or surroundings, to a more analytical and sensory man who learned to let himself be carried away by his feelings, becoming more humble. But Elizabeth also learned to put her pride behind her and give second chances, because yes, they, the protagonists of this story, are the ones who give the book its name: Elizabeth represents Pride and Darcy represents Prejudice.
Otro elemento que por supuesto tengo que tomar en cuenta es la evolución de personajes, sobre todo con el señor Darcy, quien pasó de ser un tipo arrogante y pesado, incapaz de ver más allá de la apariencia de una persona o el entorno que la rodea, a un hombre más analítico y sensorial, aprendió a dejarse llevar por sus sentimientos, tornándose más humilde, pero además Elizabeth también aprendió a dejar el orgullo atrás y a dar segundas oportunidades, porque sí, ellos, los protagonistas de esta historia son quienes le dan nombre al libro, Elizabeth representa el Orgullo y Darcy el Prejuicio.
