Alice Through the Looking Glass [Review] ESP/ENG
Hello, hello, internet people! How are you? I'm happy to start 2026 by reading one of the books I've always wanted to read 😍 Alice Through the Looking Glass, although for now I only have it in digital format, I don't rule out the possibility of finding it in physical format someday.
¡Hola, Hola, gente de internet! ¿Cómo están? Por mi parte estoy feliz de iniciar este 2026 leyendo uno de los libros que siempre quise leer 😍 Alicia a Través del Espejo, aunque por ahora solo lo conseguí en formato digital no descarto la posibilidad de encontrarlo algún día en formato físico.
As in the previous book, Alice is very bored with her everyday life, that gray, empty, and monotonous world which, for an imaginative and astute child, is quite suffocating. So, looking into the mirror, she begins to imagine what it would be like to be on the other side. However, as she gets closer, she discovers that she can indeed pass through the looking glass. On the other side, she discovers that the world as she knows it doesn't exist. There, everything functions like a giant chessboard where she becomes one of the pawns and must move from square to square. Just as in the previous novel where Alice reached the other world through a hole while chasing the White Rabbit, in this chess world she encounters some eccentric characters like the Red Queen, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee. She also encounters riddles and numerous puns.
Al igual que en el libro anterior, Alicia está muy aburrida de la cotidianidad en la que vive, ese mundo gris, vacío y monótono que para un niño imaginativo y sagaz es muy asfixiante, así que al mirar el espejo empieza a imaginar como sería estar al otro lado de este, sin embargo a medida que se acerca, descubre que ciertamente puede atravesar el espejo, así que al otro lado descubre que todo el mundo tal como lo conoce no existe, allí todo funciona como en un ajedrez gigante donde ella se convierte en uno de los peones y debe avanzar de casilla en casilla. Al igual que en la novela anterior donde Alicia llegaba al otro mundo a través de un agujero mientras perseguía al conejo blanco, en este mundo de ajedrez ella se reencuentra con algunos personajes excéntricos como la Reina Roja, Tweedledum y Tweedledee. Además también se consigue con acertijos y muchísimos juegos de palabras.
Alice must keep going until she reaches the other side and becomes queen, but when she succeeds, everything turns into chaos, but fortunately she wakes up, however a new dilemma begins: Is it all a dream of hers or of the red king?
Alicia debe seguir avanzando hasta llegar al otro lado y convertirse en reina, pero cuando lo consigue, todo se vuelve un caos, pero afortunadamente despierta, sin embargo comienza un nuevo dilema ¿Todo se traba de un sueño suyo o del rey rojo?
In this new world, everything is absurd and seems to make no sense, but unlike in the previous novel, Alice is more aware of this, perhaps as a sign that she is growing up and gradually approaching maturity, so she looks for logic in everything. Furthermore, through semantics and the strict rules of chess, the author intends to satirize the social norms of his time, especially the absurd rigidity that children had to deal with, something that was totally opposite to their free nature, especially Alice's, who is more imaginative than the average child or young person.
En ese nuevo mundo todo es absurdo y parece no tener sentido, pero a diferencia de la novela anterior Alicia es más consciente de esto, tal vez como una señal de que está creciendo y poco poco se acerca a la madurez, así que busca la lógica en todo, además, a través de la semántica y las estrictas reglas del ajedrez, el autor pretende satirizar las normas sociales de su época, en especial la rigidez absurda con la que los niños debían lidiar, algo que era totalmente opuesto a su naturaleza libre, en especial la de Alicia, quién es más imaginativa que el niño o joven promedio.
The ambiguity with which Carol presents the events of the novel, making us question, like Alice, whether it was all a dream or not, perhaps makes us question whether people really should follow those absurd precepts or not. But we must also consider that this is the adult world, full of rules and situations that we cannot control. So the chessboard is perhaps a metaphor for the transition to adulthood, a life full of rules and logic that, even if we don't like them, we have to follow if we want to achieve a goal.
Esa ambigüedad con la que Carol nos muestra los hechos de la novela y que nos hace cuestionar al igual que Alicia, si todo se trató de un sueño o no, tal vez nos hace cuestionar si realmente la gente debía seguir esos preceptos absurdos o no, pero también hay que tomar en cuenta que así es el mundo adulto, lleno de reglas y situaciones que no podemos controlar, así que el tablero de ajedrez quizá es una metáfora de la transición a la adultez, una vida llena de reglas y lógicas que aunque no nos gusten tenemos que seguir si queremos alcanzar un objetivo.
It's inevitable to compare the rigidity of chess with the freedom of the playing cards in the previous novel, but both this, along with the riddles and peculiar characters, constantly lead Alice to question her own identity: Who is she, and what does she want? All this questioning makes her feel strange, something very common in human beings as they reach maturity, leaving behind old habits and beliefs. In conclusion, this is a more reflective and philosophical book than the previous novel. It allows us to see life from a deeper perspective, helping us to question why we are here and what our purpose is. It's good to follow the rules because life, even though it's a game, has its codes, but we shouldn't abandon our authenticity, since that's what sets us apart from the rest. 🤗
Es inevitable comparar la rigidez del ajedrez con la libertad de los naipes de la novela anterior, pero tanto esto como los enigmas y los personajes peculiares llevan a Alicia constantemente a cuestionar su propia identidad ¿Quién es y qué desea? y todo este cuestionamiento la hacen sentir extraña, algo muy propio de los seres humanos cuando van alcanzando la madurez, dejando atrás viejos hábitos y creencias. En conclusión este es un libro más reflexivo y filosófico que la novela anterior, nos permite ver la vida desde un punto de vista más profundo, nos ayuda a cuestionarnos ¿por qué estamos aquí y cuál es nuestro propósito? Es bueno seguir las reglas porque la vida aunque sea un juego, tiene sus códigos, pero no debemos dejar de lado nuestra autenticidad, ya que es lo que nos diferencia del resto 🤗.
