My visit to Quang Phu Ca, the Incense Village in Vietnam

The decision to go on my own

The other day, I ventured to the incense village, a small town near Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, in the north of the country. I couldn't find a tour that lasted only a few hours, and I also wanted to try using public transportation, so I did.

How public transportation works

It's quite interesting how it works because once you get on, you have to sit down and after a while someone comes to collect your fare. There are three main characters in Hanoi's public transport system that you will see on every trip: the driver, the person who collects your fare, and the inspector.

In Vietnam, at least in Hanoi, you could say that it is one of the most developed cities as it is the capital. No cards are used, but citizens have a QR code that they can use to pay less or not pay at all, depending on their situation. If tourists have to pay in cash, I don't know if you can use a credit or debit card to pay, but I was always charged in cash, and the tickets they give you are similar to the old ones they used to give in Argentina.

Hace un día me aventuré a ir a la aldea de incienso, un pequeño pueblo que se encuentra cerca de Hanoi, la capital de Vietnam, al norte del país. Resulta que no encontré una excursión que fuera por pocas horas y además tenía ganas de aventurarme a usar el transporte público, así que lo hice.

Cómo funciona el transporte público

Es bastante interesante cómo se maneja porque una vez que subís, tenés que sí o sí sentarte y al ratito viene alguien a cobrarte. Hay tres personajes principales en el transporte público de Hanoi y que vas a ver en todos los viajes: el chofer, la persona que te cobra y el inspector.

En Vietnam, al menos en Hanói, se podría decir que es una de las ciudades más desarrolladas al ser la capital. No se utiliza ningún tipo de tarjeta, sino que los ciudadanos tienen un QR que pueden utilizar para pagar más barato o no pagar dependiendo la situación de cada uno, y si el turista tiene que pagar en efectivo, en realidad no sé si te permite utilizar alguna tarjeta de crédito o de débito para pagar, pero siempre me cobraron en efectivo y los boletos que dan son parecidos a los antiguos que daban en Argentina.

Travel times and costs

The trip to the incense village takes two hours by public transport and approximately one hour and 10 minutes by car. I spent 25,000 dongs, which is about €1.10, but if I had wanted to go by taxi, it would have cost around 360,000 dongs, or about €17, so it was much cheaper, but it took me twice as long.

Expectations and reality in transportation

As the city is quite chaotic, with a lot of noise, dirt, and people, I was prepared to encounter something similar on public transportation. When I traveled through Peru, I saw chickens in cages on buses, so I really expected that this time as well.

In Hanoi and also in Ho Chi Minh City (I don't know if the whole country is the same, but I'm talking about the two most important cities), there are chickens in the streets, roosters running loose, chickens, boxes with fish that they catch right there and wash right there. That's why I was pleasantly surprised by the buses, because there weren't even that many people. Public transportation was extremely clean, with air conditioning, and although the vehicle was quite old, it was in very good condition.

El viaje a la aldea del incienso demora dos horas en transporte público y una hora y 10 aproximadamente en auto. Mientras yo me gasté 25.000 dongs, lo que es más o menos 1,10 €, si yo hubiese querido ir en taxi salía alrededor de 360.000 dongs, es decir unos 17 €, así que me salió bastante más económico, pero me demoré el doble de tiempo.

Expectativas y realidad en el transporte

Como la ciudad es bastante caótica, hay mucho ruido, mucha suciedad, mucha gente, estaba preparada para encontrarme con algo similar en el transporte público. Cuando viajé por Perú, llegué a ver gallinas en sus jaulas en los buses de línea, por lo que realmente me esperaba eso también esta vez.

En Hanói y también en Ho Chi Minh (no sé si todo el país será igual, pero estoy hablando de las dos ciudades más importantes), hay gallinas en las calles, gallos sueltos, pollos, tienen las cajas con los pescados que van pescando ahí mismo y que lavan ahí mismo. Por eso me sorprendieron para bien los buses, porque no había mucha gente siquiera. El transporte público estaba sumamente limpio, con aire acondicionado, y aunque el vehículo era bastante antiguo, estaba en muy buen estado.

Arrival at the incense village

When I arrived at the incense village, I expected to find something a little more touristy, larger in structure, more prepared to receive foreigners. In other words, I expected a café where I could rest and use the restroom, something like that, but I went at 1:00 p.m., so I guess if there was anything like that, it was closed. I only found a couple of large stalls selling incense and also manufacturing it. They were open for taking photos and shopping, and one of them had a small café where, luckily for me, I was able to use the bathroom (this can be a very particular issue when traveling in unfamiliar areas without adequate infrastructure for visitors).

Lo que sí, al llegar a la aldea del incienso, esperaba encontrarme algo un poquito más turístico, más grande en estructura, más preparada para recibir a extranjeros, es decir, esperaba una cafetería donde pudiera descansar e ir a un baño, algo así, pero yo fui a la 1:00 de la tarde, entonces estimo que si había algo similar, estaba cerrado. Solamente encontré un par de grandes puestos que vendían incienso y que los fabricaban también. Estaban abiertos para sacar fotos, para comprar, y uno de ellos tenía un pequeño café, donde para mi fortuna, pude ir al baño (esto puede ser un tema muy particular al estar viajando por zonas desconocidas y sin infraestructura adecuada para el visitante).

Walking off the beaten track

Before finding these places, as I was on my own, I started walking in another direction and found myself walking in the middle of nowhere, among some vegetation, on a solid but almost abandoned road, where a few people were walking at a considerable distance from each other.

It was also very nice to discover a little beyond the well-known shops in this town, as I was able to see how very elderly women are preparing the wood, cutting it, making very thin sticks to assemble into bouquets and then leaving them to dry in front of the house or on the side of the road.

As I continued walking, I encountered several boys and girls on bicycles, and they all greeted me with a friendly “hello!” and a smile on their faces, which was quite endearing. After about 500 meters, I decided to turn back, as there was nothing in this direction, just little houses where people were taking wood out, cutting wood, and not in all of them, really, just in a few.

Caminando fuera del circuito

Antes de encontrar estos lugares, como fui por mi cuenta, empecé a caminar para otro lado y ahí me encontré caminando en el medio de la nada, entre algo de vegetación, con una calle consistente pero casi abandonada, por donde caminaban algunas personas con una considerable distancia entre sí.

Igualmente me vino muy bien descubrir un poco más allá de las tiendas conocidas de venta de este pueblo, ya que pude ver cómo señoras muy mayores están preparando la madera, cortándola, haciendo varillas bien finitas para armar en ramilletes y para luego dejarlas secar frente a la casa o a un costado de la ruta.

Al continuar caminando, me encontré con varios niños y niñas en bicicleta y todos me saludaron con un amable “hello!” y con una sonrisa en su rostro, algo bastante tierno. Al cabo de unos 500 metros decidí regresar, ya que no había nada en esta dirección, simplemente casitas en donde las puertas estaban sacando madera, cortando madera, y no en todas en realidad, solo en algunas pocas.

Doubts and continuity

I said... well, maybe I'm lost, and maybe this isn't the place, maybe it's not the right time. It couldn't be just that because I had seen some pretty good photos of the place.

Dije… bueno, tal vez estoy perdida y tal vez no por acá, quizás no es esta la hora. No podía ser solo eso porque había visto fotos bastante buenas del lugar.

So, trusting my instincts, I kept walking a little further and found these places, one of them huge and closed, with all the incense sticks under the roof and arranged in a semicircle. A curious fact is that, at first glance, I thought that colored part was the incense that burns, but no, it's the wood, which looks so beautiful that people were taking pictures and so on.

I wasn't in the mood to pose, so I didn't even bother to ask someone to take a picture of me and took pictures of the place.

I thought it was the only thing open and I was already regretting spending four hours to see that, but since I was there, I kept walking a little further and found it... another quite large place in front of a temple, where there was a café and everything was also very nicely arranged like the other one, but this one was outdoors.

Así que confiando, seguí caminando un poco y encontré estos locales, uno de ellos súper grande y cerrado, con todos los inciensos bajo techo y dispuestos de manera semicircular. Un dato curioso es que, a simple vista, pensé que esa parte de color era ya la masilla que se quema, pero no, es la madera, que igual se ve tan bonita que había personas sacándose fotos y demás.

Yo no estaba de humor para posar, así que ni siquiera me preocupé en pedirle a alguien que me sacara una foto y saqué fotos del sitio.

Pensé que era lo único abierto y ya me lamentaba de haber utilizado cuatro horas para ver eso, pero ya que estaba ahí seguí caminando un poco más y lo encontré… otro lugar también bastante grande frente a un templo, que es donde había una cafetería y estaba todo también preparado muy bonito como en el otro, pero esto era al aire libre.

Impressions of the place

This town has a lot of land and not many people. Sometimes that can be a little unsettling. There are also strange smells. The truth is that there is so much land and water drying up, stagnant water, and smells in the streets that it's not the most hygienic place to visit.

Sensaciones del lugar

En este pueblo hay mucha tierra y no hay mucha gente. A veces eso te descoloca un poco. Además, hay olores raros. La verdad es que hay tanta tierra y agua que se está secando, agua estancada y olores en las calles, que no sería el lugar más higiénico para visitar.

Recommendations

I think in this case it's better to go by car. If you're traveling in a group, it's probably better to go with your friends, take your time, and come back when you want. It's not a big deal, really, but it's not a tourist spot and it's not close by.

I recommend going in the morning, between 10 and 11 a.m., which is when Hanoi is most active. I think that this town, being so far from the city and quite small, is just waking up at that time, because when I went at 1:30 p.m., there was almost no activity.

Recomendaciones

Creo que en este caso es mejor ir en auto. Capaz que si viajás en grupo es mucho mejor ir con tu gente, moverte tranquilo y volver cuando quieras. No es nada grave en realidad, pero no es un lugar turístico ni queda cerca.

Recomiendo ir en horario de la mañana, más o menos entre las 10 y las 11, que es cuando Hanoi está más activo. Estimo que este pueblo, al estar tan alejado de la ciudad y ser bastante chico, recién se despierta un poco a esa hora, porque cuando fui a la 1:30 de la tarde no había casi movimiento.

Finally...

I decided to use public transportation and found it to be safe, quite orderly, clean, and inexpensive. After that experience, I even took public transportation to the airport, which was also much cheaper.

I hope you like and enjoy these exotic landscapes and images. I had never seen anything like it before. Of course, I bought some incense sticks that cost me just over two euros, less than five for sure, very cheap and you get several. I'm still hoping they don't break during the trip.

I recommend going if you have the chance to stay for several days and, if you can, go with someone else. This town is very into incense, but it's not really anything out of this world. Still, if you're a big fan of incense, I would recommend going on a tour to see the entire manufacturing process. They are not only decorative or aromatic elements, but also energetic and closely linked to the spirituality of Vietnam, according to the religion they follow, where incense is used to balance energy.

Finalmente…

Me animé a utilizar transporte público y me pareció seguro, bastante ordenado, limpio y económico. Después de haber vivido esa experiencia, incluso me fui al aeropuerto en transporte público, o sea que me salió mucho más barato también.

Espero que les guste y disfruten estos paisajes o imágenes tan exóticas. Nunca había visto algo así. Por supuesto que me compré unas varillas de incienso que me salieron poco más de dos euros, menos de cinco seguro, muy baratas y vienen varias. Todavía estoy esperando que durante el viaje no se me rompan.

Recomiendo ir si tenés la posibilidad de quedarte varios días y, si podés, ir con alguien más. Este pueblo es muy de incienso, pero no es algo del otro mundo, la verdad. Igual, si sos muy fan del incienso, sí te recomendaría irte en un tour para poder ver todo el proceso de fabricación. No son solo elementos decorativos o aromáticos, sino también energéticos y muy vinculados con lo espiritual de Vietnam, según la religión que sigan, donde se usa el incienso para balancear la energía.
