Crossing the Andes Mountains, an unparalleled journey in Sud America

The iconic Cristo Redentor System, the Crossing of the Andes could not be postponed or ignored.

Even though I had bought a plane ticket, can you believe I made a mistake? I bought it for the following month, yes, I lost money, but what I really wanted was to cross the mountains by land. Nothing more and nothing less than the Andes mountain range.

It had been many years since I had experienced something like this. As a teenager, young adult, and even as a child, I often crossed the mountains by car, bus, and, of course, plane. But doing it by air, although it has its charm, is not the same as doing it by land.

From Santiago de Chile to Mendoza, I used Turbus, a well-known Chilean company. We left from the Alameda Terminal, which is exclusively for these buses. The ticket cost me around €40, including luggage, and the service was excellent.

Aunque yo había sacado un pasaje en avión, ¿pueden creer que me equivoqué? Lo saqué para el mes siguiente, sí, perdí dinero, pero lo que yo realmente quería era cruzar la montaña por tierra. Nada más y nada menos que la cordillera de Los Andes.

Hacía muchísimos años que no vivía algo así. Siendo adolescente, adulta joven e incluso niña, muchas veces crucé la cordillera en auto, en colectivo y, claro, en avión. Pero hacerlo por aire, aunque tiene su encanto, no es lo mismo que hacerlo por tierra.

Desde Santiago de Chile, con destino a Mendoza, utilicé la compañía Turbus, una empresa chilena muy conocida. Salimos desde la Terminal Alameda, exclusiva para estos buses. El pasaje me costó alrededor de 40 €, con maletas incluidas, y el servicio fue excelente.

I arrived extremely tired: I had traveled more than 17 hours from Barcelona to Bogotá, with a five-hour layover, and from Bogotá to Santiago, Chile. The flight I had originally purchased was on a Tuesday night. I arrived in Santiago at 5:30 a.m. and the flight was at 9:30 p.m.

Luckily, I was wrong. They say that every cloud has a silver lining, and I am convinced of that. Two days earlier, I bought a bus ticket and, although the trip was longer, I chose the best seat: I slept, rested, and stretched my legs after so many hours of travel.

Crossing the Andes mountain range has always been very meaningful to me. It connects me with nature, with a wild part of it. There is no jungle or much wildlife, but the mountain range is an impressive natural phenomenon. Billions of years ago, tectonic plates collided and the famous mountain range rose, where Aconcagua, one of the highest peaks in the world, stands at almost 7,000 m above sea level. I am proud to say that it is in Mendoza, my hometown.

Llegué sumamente cansada: había viajado más de 17 horas desde Barcelona hasta Bogotá, con una escala de cinco horas, y desde Bogotá a Santiago de Chile. El vuelo que había comprado originalmente era por la noche de un martes. Llegué a Santiago a las 5:30 a.m. y el vuelo era a las 9:30 p.m.

Por suerte, me equivoqué. Dicen que no hay mal que por bien no venga, y yo estoy convencida de eso. Dos días antes compré el pasaje en bus y, aunque el viaje era más largo, elegí el mejor asiento: dormí, descansé y estiré las piernas después de tantas horas de viaje.

Cruzar la cordillera de Los Andes siempre ha sido muy significativo para mí. Me conecta con la naturaleza, con una parte salvaje de ella. No hay selva ni mucha fauna, pero la cordillera es un fenómeno natural impresionante. Hace miles de millones de años, las capas tectónicas chocaron y se elevó la famosa cadena montañosa, donde se encuentra el Aconcagua, uno de los picos más altos del mundo, con casi 7.000 m sobre el nivel del mar. Orgullosamente, está en Mendoza, mi ciudad natal.

I wanted to see the snails. On the way down the mountain, they built a series of curves called snails. They descend from east to west until they reach the road that continues to Chile.

To my surprise, the mountain wasn't very snowy. I thought there would be more snow because, according to what I had been told, the winter was cold with heavy snowfall. But it had melted quite a bit.

When you make this trip, you have to go through immigration and customs. You hand in your immigration card in Chile and then your documentation in Argentina. I saw a Mexican guy who didn't have a return ticket or proof of accommodation, and they left him in Chile. A woman couldn't even get on the bus because she didn't have her PDI card from the Chilean police.

After the checks, you go through scanners and they check your luggage. Finally, you're ready to continue on to Argentina.

Tenía ganas de ver los caracoles. En el camino, para descender la altura marcada de la montaña, construyeron un conjunto de curvas que se llaman así: los caracoles. Van descendiendo desde el este hacia el oeste, hasta llegar a la ruta que continúa hacia Chile.

Para mi sorpresa, la montaña no estaba muy nevada. Pensé que habría más nieve, porque según me contaron, el invierno fue frío y con abundantes nevadas. Pero estaba bastante derretida.

Cuando haces este viaje, hay que pasar por migraciones y aduana. Entregas tu tarjeta migratoria única en Chile y luego tu documentación en Argentina. Vi a un chico mexicano que no tenía pasaje de vuelta ni comprobante de alojamiento y lo dejaron en Chile. Una señora ni siquiera pudo subir al bus por no tener su tarjeta PDI de la policía chilena.

Después de los controles, pasas por escáneres y revisan tu equipaje. Finalmente, estás listo para continuar hacia Argentina.

The mountain range is more impressive on the Argentine side, although Patagonia, with its lower hills, is said to be more beautiful on the Chilean side. For me, the mountain range itself is magical and beautiful, and it changes depending on the latitude. In the south, it is lower, with more valleys and greenery; in the north, it is higher and more arid. Mendoza, at about 33° latitude, is in an almost desert area, with only 200 mm of rainfall per year.

As a trained geographer, I can say that experiencing this is a gift from nature. Seeing these landscapes moves me every time, even if it is not the first time I have crossed them.

La cordillera es más impresionante del lado argentino, aunque la Patagonia, con sus cerros más bajos, dicen que es más bonita del lado chileno. Para mí, la cordillera en sí es mágica y preciosa, y cambia según la latitud. En el sur, es más baja, con más valles y verde; en el norte, es más alta y árida. Mendoza, a unos 33° de latitud, está en zona casi desértica, con solo 200 mm de lluvia al año.

Como geógrafa de formación, puedo decir que vivir esto es un regalo de la naturaleza. Ver estos paisajes me emociona cada vez, aunque no sea la primera vez que los cruzo.

This crossing of the Andes is emblematic. It was traveled by General José de San Martín, the Liberator of America, who crossed this mountain range to liberate Argentina and other territories of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, dependent on Spain. Today we are free thanks to his courage. Many say he did it with tuberculosis, crossing these heights on a mule.

It is a beautiful story and a journey that I recommend experiencing at least once in your life. Thank you for joining me on this adventure through the mountains.

Este cruce de los Andes es emblemático. Fue recorrido por el general José de San Martín, el Libertador de América, que cruzó esta cordillera para liberar a Argentina y otros territorios del Virreinato del Río de la Plata, dependiente de España. Hoy somos libres gracias a su valentía. Muchos dicen que lo hizo con tuberculosis, cruzando en mula estas alturas.

Es una historia hermosa y un viaje que recomiendo vivir al menos una vez en la vida. Gracias por acompañarme en esta aventura a través de la montaña.
