I'm a proud Akokite ☺️. Unique features from school.

When I first entered the university, I had no clue about what to do or how to go about things but luckily, I met good people who were willing to lead me by the hands and show me the reins of how things were done. I blame my overly introverted nature for this but thankfully, I have left that shell behind.

If I could have a do over, I'm sure I would have explored every inch of my University campus to the fullest but still I retain lovely memories of my days in school despite mot being an explorer.

I was blessed to attend the prestigious University of Lagos aka Great Akokites!. I needed to hail us because you can't come from UNILAG and not know that slogan, hehe. We are and remain the great Akokites.

Back then in mid 2000’s, going to school was a huge success but landing a good school that boasts of several achievements to its name was noteworthy. UNILAG is a school that boldly screams Beauty and Brains. It boasts of both academic and aesthetic prowess.

As I journeyed through school one day at a time and with the guidance of my good peers, I was privileged to see the unique features that keep UNILAG as one of the best universities in Nigeria.

The very first one that caught my attention was the lagoon front. It's like a mini beach inside the school. You don't need to go to an actual beach to experience the beachy experience, lol. This place was great for picnics, for reading and for romance (coughs). From the lagoon front, you could easily see third mainland bridge come into view with the large expanse of water body.

Following right behind it is the Love garden or Lagoon garden. I won't lie, I frequented this place a lot as it had a cool ambience about it and also, it was a spot to hear lots of juicy gossip. I would seat on a bench with a book in hand and act like I was reading whereas, I was busy listening in on juicy gossip. The sad part is that 90 percent of the gossip was about heartbreaks…chai, so sad for them but juicy for me.

Moving on, Unilag has its own radio station. I'm sure if I wasn't so shy baack then, I would have gotten a part time job with them like many of my peers did. Unilag 103.1 FM is the radio station's frequency and they are still running till date.

The next unique feature is the amphitheatre close to the sports center. I didn't frequent these places as I was too nerdy and shy to be among people as the theatre was always filled up with several cliques of students.

Then we move to the Moremi hall garden and Shofoluwe parks. These are also great places to sit during the cool of the day . Unilag also held beauty pageants for Mr & Mrs Unilag but I never participated as I was an off campus student. I went to school from home and went back home after lectures. So I didn't have time to partake in the pageants but I was always filled in whenever I came and trust me, Unilag pageants had all the pomp you could imagine.

Like other schools, we had rag day and cultural day events. I participated in rag day only once and I didn't find it fun at all. I wished it could be scrapped out but I don't have the final say, the Student and Senate body does.

Thanks for reading.

When it comes universities with prestigious names and academic prowess, UNILAG is definitely one of the few. Lagos State government invested a lot in that school since its also stood as the state public image.
