Another Estate Sale Find – 1950 Silver Canada Dollar

Time is a little short today, but I still wanted to share my latest estate sale find—another addition to the stack! This time, I picked up a 1950 Silver Canada Dollar in a protective capsule. It’s been graded MS-60 by the National Numismatic Certification organization, and at just $15.00 USD, I think I did pretty well.

The coin is made of 80% silver and 20% copper, with a total weight of 23.33 grams. That works out to about 0.66 ounces of silver—not a huge amount, but enough to make it count in the stack. While there could be some profit potential if I ever decided to sell, for now, it's staying put with the rest of the collection.

A Few Interesting Details

The obverse features King George VI, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget, with the Latin inscription:
"GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX"—meaning George VI, King by the Grace of God.

On the reverse, we see a classic design by Emanuel Otto Hahn, showing a voyageur and an indigenous paddler in a canoe. One of the bundles in the canoe bears the initials "HB", a nod to the historic Hudson’s Bay Company.

The coin was minted at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, and like many classic silver dollars, it has a milled edge.

Not a bad find for a little time searching!

I Just Wish Huxley Was More Interested In It

IMG_6852.jpeg

I disturbed him while he was resting by the back sliding door, looking out at the back yard. He love laying here in the sun while I work from home. Our little guard dog! Just not as interested in the coin as the things going on in the back yard. I sort of can't blame him. It's a Nice Spot.

I got the stare down

That's a neat find! A silver dollar from the Royal Canadian Mint is pretty special. Too bad Huxley isn't as interested in it as you are, but hey, he's got his priorities!

Resting by the back sliding door, soaking up the sun, and keeping an eye on the backyard sounds like a perfect spot for your little guard dog. I guess it's hard to compete with all the action going on out there.

Sometimes, your furry son just know how to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Keep that coin safe, though— it's a treasure, @bdmillergallery ! 😊🐾☀️

Thanks! A silver dollar from the Royal Canadian Mint definitely adds a unique touch to the collection. It may not have caught Huxley’s full attention, but I can’t blame him .. There’s a whole world of sights and sounds outside that sliding door! He’s got his priorities straight .. Warm sun, backyard patrol, and the occasional squirrel to keep things interesting.

You’re right, sometimes the simple pleasures are the best. While I admire the history and artistry of these coins, Huxley’s just out here living in the moment. No worries, though, the coin is tucked away safe and sound!

Appreciate your thoughtful comment!

It's great to see that people are interested in silver and buying them will make a good profit in time and I like the design a lot.

It's fun to collect and when it comes time to spend the value gain, I'll be ready.

That's cool with the shout out to Hudson Bay Company. I never realized just how big and influential they were until I watched the show Frontier on Netflix.

Oh gosh yeah.. I forgot about that show.
The coin has a few areas of toning/patina.. but not bad. I thought it was a nice find for the money.

It was a pretty good show. I wish they had given it a few more seasons.

It always seems the shows we like and get immersed in .. they decide to pull the plug prematurely. grrrr.

I totally agree with this. My wife has become pretty jaded about most shows lately because she figures they are just going to cancel it anyway!

You did very well on that sweet Voyageur dollar. There's very good details remaining on the canoe and fur stacks.

You are right, a silver coin whose value increases every day, a price reminds us in Jio that at what price we bought it and what price we can get in future but which we want to keep with us.He is a friend of ours who always has something special about him and gives value to the silver coin.no more than a friend

(Edited)

Maybe if you start him off with a cookie or a treat every time you show him a silver coin. Associate coins with cookies, but not eat the coin. Could work.
