Orchid Update - DIY Orchid Rack

IMG_2402.jpeg

Time Time Time ..

It feels as though time is escaping me .. Lately it's as if spring has sprung and time is now fleeting faster again. Like clockwork every spring comes and my work life gets busier and my home life suffers. It comes with a territory I suppose. So it's been a while since I put out a post and I thought today I would solve that, take a break from life and post about our orchids. After all they make us happy!

IMG_2411.jpeg

A Little DIY Orchid Style ..

I have been eyeing up Orchid racks lately.. But I needed a quick and simple solution NOW. Our two Vanda orchids, the ones that I have to soak in water daily, were both hanging on an outdoor plant stand, and things were getting a little bit too tight. These Vanda orchids need plenty of breathing room so they completely dry out before their next soak. That got me thinking that I need to come up with a different solution for hanging these. They also love a lot of light and I wanted to move them closer to the door where the majority of the light shines through.

IMG_2412.jpeg

I remembered having a coat rack in my basement .. That I put away for the yard sale that I never had. (Maybe this year. Hehehe.) I thought this might be a perfect temporary solution, but it turns out it may be more of a permanent one. It has hooks made for coats that would be perfect for hanging my bare root Vanda orchids. After locating it in my basement and bringing it up, and cleaning the cobwebs off of it, I forgot that it had a brace in the middle. It was a circular brace made for placing umbrellas into it. This would make a perfect shelf! I could display our other sun loving orchids in this area as well. But how would I do it?

How could make a shelf to sit on top of that bracket. The past couple of years when we have parties at the house, and buy either shrimp or fruit or vegetables, they come on the sturdy black trays. I've been keeping those trays because they make great water collectors for underneath our pots.

IMG_2427.jpeg

I grabbed one of those and cut out a hole in the center. I took off the brackets at the top and slid the entire piece down over top of the center pole.

Instant Shelf!

IMG_2423.jpeg

IMG_2424.jpeg

IMG_2425.jpeg

IMG_2409.jpeg

I have to say it turned out better than I thought it would. I don't think anybody would even know it was originally a coat rack.

IMG_2410.jpeg

I also modified the top slightly by adding some wire tie loops to hang the Vandas. It's probably the part I most visually don't like. Once I come up with a better solution I will implement it. But for now the homemade loops work.

IMG_2429.jpeg

And look at that… Plenty of hooks still available! I guess this means I can buy more Vanda orchids. Smile smile.

IMG_2410.jpeg

There's a small tray at the bottom of the coat rack where I set our two Dendrobium orchids. They are also sun loving orchids so this is a good solution. The only thing is that area/shelf isn't quite good enough to set these pots. I'll have to find a larger tray to fit there or possibly build a a wooden shelf. This way those orchids are more stable and are at lower risk of falling over onto the floor.

IMG_2422.jpeg

IMG_2408.jpeg

I think I will end the orchid update here. There's always more to talk about, but already I can see this is getting lengthy. I'll write something again soon.

Silver

IMG_2417.jpeg

Last but definitely not least silver! .. I can't end this post without talking about a piece of silver, that just wouldn't be right. So today I have on display a Somali Republic 2021 100 shillings silver coin. It's a 1 ounce, Bavarian State Mint issued coin, depicting an elephant on one side and a Somali crest on the other. I have to say this is one of my more favorite coins in the stack. This beautiful elephant, like my orchids, need the proper care and preservation.

IMG_2416.jpeg

My favorite part of this coin is the actual elephant. It's so detailed whereas the rest of the coin design pales and comparison to it. But that's OK because the elephant should stand out and be the star of the show. Also like our orchids the flower stand out and the plants sometimes take the backseat, so is the case with this coin at least in my opinion.

IMG_2415.jpeg

Love it!

Your house is very beautiful with all those plants and flowers! I imagine the air feels very clean. Can't you just put the dendrobiums on the floor?

I gotta write about my silver one of these days. And my orchid. I feel so uninformed about both, who would want to read them? I could write about the three silver coins I had hidden somewhere in my house, had searched and searched for, and didn't remember where I had put them until I'd put the plastic drawers full of old belts out on the curb for someone else to take. Then I remembered. Can you guess where I had hidden my coins? There was $6000 in cash in there too. There;s gotta be a post in there somewhere.

Holy cow! $6000! That's a nice find. I bet you're glad you remembered, finally, that you put it there.
Feels good to do a little spring cleaning, even if it's for the soul purpose of finding something.
Yeah I could put the orchids on the ground, but I was just thinking of something easily I could either move to clean quickly. I didn't write about it but I also thought about putting some casters on the bottom/wheels. Then I could easily roll it around closer to the sun And out-of-the-way to clean the floor.

I remembered where I put it, after someone had taken it off my curb! I hope it helped some destitute person. Along with three bars of silver, it was quite a haul.

Oh noooooooooo.... I'm sorry. That sucks. It wasn't me.. I would have returned and given it back. That's crazy.

Yeah, but fortunately, I can do fine without it. I just hope the person who took my belts didnt' head over to the nearby casino and lose it all, or drink it all up. I like to think they took the family on a nice vacation, paid off a credit card or car loan, and got some relief.

Back to you. I like the plants on castors idea, to easily move to clean. Maybe individual castors? I wish I had a nice large sunny window like yours. Your home is beautiful, the plants elevate the look and, I would imagine, the mood.

One can only hope I suppose. Yes individual casters under each of the legs. I have to give that more thought. But we'll see what comes with it. They do greatly improve our mood and give us something to do as a hobby. It's quite enjoyable for us both which is nice. we both have our individual things we like to do but to have one thing to do together is kind of cool. We could use the distraction and something to look forward to after what we've been through with the dogs.

Looking good! See, my wife would have thrown the tray away and then when I needed it, it wouldn't have been there! I get why she does it though. Like that new commercial about turning into your parents!

Hahaha .. So true. Love those commercials they always make me laugh because I do some of those things. I guess that shows how old we are. Lol. They're good sturdy trays I hate to throw them out because I always use them for this and that. They really do make a good Water catchers for underneath your house plants. The black so they don't really stand out. But if you don't have any house plants 🤭🫣😜

It takes a lot of work on them, I know it's watering on time and a lot of things to take care of to grow them.

A perfect place to put and design those orchids. I love to look at it as it's very healthy and well-taken. I suddenly remember our orchids there in our farm. I miss them. 😊

Hahaha. I understand. Kids and pets can be rough on plants. To say the least. I think we're up to almost 50 house plants by now.

I love this!!! Such a space saver and looks nice also! Might as well share your post with my mom since she has a lot of orchids and this would be very handy, lol!

Haha. Share away. Although I see many reasonably priced stands on Amazon anymore. But if you have a coat practice lying around like I do, lol, that maybe she can turn it into a plant stand. I'd like to put some wheels on the bottom of it so I can roll it around when I need to. We'll see.

Perhaps pieces of sturdy plywood cut to size and painted black. They could be screwed crosswise so 2 legs were under the central part vs trying to meet edges on top of a leg. The edges would meet over open areas. I should think 1/2" would be sturdy enough to do this. (That's assuming the legs come out horizontal to the floor, not angled...)

There are so many blooming now, you must be delighted!

Great advice! Exactly what I was thinking. I have the wood I just need a nice 70° day to get me excited to do something with my saw. Plus I have to dig it out from in the backside of the shed. I have other small projects I need to do so I'll probably do that when I tackle the others
