Dumpster Diving? Oh Yeah, It Happened! - Oh.. and The Coconut Orchid Is Blooming

IMG_7147.png

First let's talk Orchids.

IMG_7142.jpeg

Before I 'Dive' into a first-time subject about unordinary finds .. let me start with something a little more familiar—my Coconut Orchid in full bloom! While it might not be the showiest orchid in my collection, its deep burgundy flowers with a speckled lip are still a treat to see. But the real magic? The scent! It smells just like coconut or coconut oil, intensely fragrant to the point where I can catch its aroma from over six feet away. It’s one of those orchids that surprises you—not with size or color, but with its ability to transport you to a tropical beach with just a single breath.

IMG_7141.jpeg

The Coconut Orchid is also a bit of a trickster when it comes to looks. If you didn’t know better, you might mistake it for a clump of grass. But despite its humble appearance, it’s a diva when it comes to care. This plant demands water, and if you neglect it, it will let you know loud and clear—probably by turning into a crispy shadow of its former self. Thankfully, I’ve figured out the sweet spot in my watering routine, and she’s loving me for it right now, putting on a fragrant show as a reward. A little high-maintenance, sure, but totally worth it!

Now, let’s talk Dumpster Diving.

IMG_7149.jpeg

The meat of today’s post is a little out of the ordinary.

Maybe even a bit strange and possibly out of character for me. But hey, sometimes you stumble across something so wild you just have to share it.

Now, before you get the wrong idea .. I’m not out there randomly stopping at dumpsters, scaling the side, and diving headfirst into unknown horrors. Nope. I have no desire to run into a raccoon, or worse, a dead body. (Yeah, no thanks.) My ‘dumpster diving’ is far more selective .. and honestly, it kind of just happens as part of the job.

See, at work, we occasionally have to clean out attics, basements, and other storage areas before we can actually get to the job at hand. That means our guys return to the shop with truckloads of stuff that gets tossed into the company dumpster. Sometimes I help unload, and sometimes I don’t have the time, so if I’m curious, I check later. And let me tell you, it is fascinating what people accumulate over the years and then suddenly decide to throw out. I could probably write a book on it.

But today, I’ll stick to the kind of discovery that gets the Silver Gold Stackers Community fired up.

IMG_7145.jpeg

Last summer .. after one such haul, I took a few minutes before heading home to rummage through what had been dumped. Most of it smelled like a musty basement, but one box in particular caught my attention—filled with what looked like jewelry boxes.

IMG_7137.jpeg

After further investigation .. They weren’t actually jewelry boxes. They were gift boxes containing various items such as knives, clocks, stick pins, tie tacks, money clips, pens, watch straps, bracelets, and a couple of necklaces. All were awards from a company called Burns Security and given out for years of service on the job. Nothing that seemed particularly valuable at first, and obviously whoever tossed them thought the same. But something told me to look a little closer.

IMG_7143.jpeg

That’s when I saw it. A tag on each item that read: “10Kt Gold Emblem.”

IMG_7146.jpeg

Oh yeah. Now we’re talking.

Each piece had a shield-like emblem attached to it made of 10-karat gold. I counted 30 items in total. Thirty! So, naturally, I had to do some quick math. I weighed one of the tie tack emblems—it came in at 1.8 grams. At the time of writing this, 10Kt gold scrap price sits around $39.34 per gram. You do the math. (Or fine, I’ll do it for you—that’s about $80 per emblem!) And I had found 30 of them.

IMG_7144.jpeg

Here is a selection of the various items

IMG_7138.jpeg

Now that’s a dumpster dive worth talking about.

A Sample of the other things I found that day...

IMG_7136.jpeg

I found a few other interesting things that day (an old Vietnam War helmet and the largest collection of Willie Nelson vinyl I have ever seen - told you there was some weird stuff in there), but nothing came close to that gold haul.

IMG_7135.jpeg

And before anyone says anything .. NOPE, I feel zero embarrassment about it. In fact, I just went digging again recently and found some more ‘trash’ that might turn into treasure. If people want to toss out things without checking them first, I’ll gladly sift through and turn their trash into precious metals for the stack.

The lesson of the day?

Always check before you toss! You never know what hidden value you might be throwing away. And if someone else is careless enough to do it… well, I’ll be there to scoop it up. Hehehehe.

Finds are fantastic but flips are what keeps me going back to the dive. Currently still sitting on a bunch of stuff that hasn't sold yet lol unfortunately going to have to trash it soon when I move. Selling locally on Facebook marketplace is the best place to list secondhand items in my experience. good luck!

I use eBay, Facebook Marketplace a little and sold a bit on Craigslist too. Yes.. making sure I unload stuff is the key. Time consuming but key. Otherwise my wife will throw me out 😆

Oh man, those are some awesome records I bet. What a great find. Oh, the gold is nice too 😀. The flowers are pretty, but I likely wouldn't be able to stand the smell. Coconut makes me nauseous.

Beautiful orchid, a gift from nature for those who spend so much time caring for it. It was worth it to search the container there you have a little treasure that whoever threw it away did not know how to appreciate. I doubt it was its owner.
But now you feel rewarded. Congratulations. Happy weekend @bdmillergallery 😘

What an incredible find, @bdmillergallery! Your story truly highlights the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." It's amazing how some people might overlook the hidden value in items they discard. You clearly have a keen eye for spotting potential treasures where others might see junk.

Your experience serves as a great reminder for all of us to take a closer look at what we might be throwing away. It’s fascinating to think about the untold stories and hidden gems that could be lying around in unexpected places.

People are crazy and some just don't care and want to be rid of it. This lady didn't even want to look through her stuff from what I hear. She said toss it all. Oh well. I have time. lol

I love orchids! I think they are delicate and quite challenging to tend to. I've never thought that there is an orchid that has similar scent to coconut or coconut oil. That's fascinating to know! You've got some interesting finds from your 'dumpster diving.' Indeed, we should carefully check first before tossing something, you might think it's a trash but it's already a treasure for others. The next haul will even be far more valuable than this!

Thank you! Orchids are definitely a challenge, but that makes them even more rewarding. The coconut-scented ones are a delightful surprise! And yes, it's amazing what treasures can be found when you take a second look. Here's to even more interesting discoveries ahead!

That was one of the things I loved about tag sales and estate sales. You could find amazing things that people had no idea of what they were getting rid of. I think the best one we found was my son, age 7, found a watch he liked and bought it for $2. It had been marked $3 but he offered less and was accepted. Turns out it was a diving watch worth $350.

But all that gold! My goodness!!

Wow, what an incredible find for your son! That’s the thrill of tag and estate sales .. you never know what hidden gems you’ll come across. And yes, the gold was definitely a surprise! It’s always exciting to uncover something truly valuable. 😊

I used to dumpster dive all the time. It was amazing for finding lumber diving in new communities. It can be amazing what folks will toss out! Jewelry, video games, dvd's. Anything.

It is amazing isn't it. I have found so much stuff. Then the next challenge is to let it go, sell it, and not clutter my home with it. lol

Indeed, there’s something magical about a fragrant plant that can transport you to a tropical beach. And wow, those dumpster dive finds are incredible! Looking forward to hearing more about your future treasure hunts. Who knows what other gems you’ll discover! 🌸
