Somba tribe - Benin

avatar
(Edited)

Kopargo town, Somba tribe, Benin (west Africa).

Here men and women have some special linear scars on the face.
These scars have been made in childhood, cutting and burning the body.
There are two meaning: first of all, to identify the person with the tribe, the second one is a symbol of beauty and creativity.

The skulls hang on the roof remind me the following thought and feeling.
Digging a trace on the surface of the world, revealing the simplicity of life, unmasking its complexity and all the load we place on it. Touch the root, recognize what life is and what death is, draw the line that joins and separates them, and draw a curve on our faces that reminds us this border, standing in silence in front of the marvel of our mistakes, which have always have a precise direction.

Imperfection are our identity, mistakes allow us to evolve.

Beautiful shots, I am not sure if the marks are still being practised in this day and age. I know about them, my late mom is from Grand Popo, Benin, has a scare as well but a small one.

Are you from Benin? I am currently residing in Benin.

Thank you! I'm not from Benin, I'm from from Italy. I have been in Benin last October. I have seen these marks only in some tribes, sometimes in some children, but these marks are not so common at now.

Oh great, I wondered when I saw your post because there aren't many people on Hive from Benin, just myself and @oadissin at the moment.

Very, I am partly Nigerian and Beninese, I moved from South Africa in February his year to Benin.
Very peaceful and loving people here in Benin, though am struggling with the French language.

Yes, I am in Cotonou in Fidjrosse less than 15 minutes walk from the beach.
The murals are lovely! I started a series about it, I shared part 1 this week: https://peakd.com/hive-184784/@joetunex/africas-longest-graffiti-mural-part-1-cccs-street-art-contest-151

I have not seen caos, I should go check it out, where is it located? 😃

That's how it is in tribes, that's how a person has to do something to recognize himself, the way people here are doing.
