Shipyard Dhaka - Rebuilding vessels - Bangladesh

avatar
(Edited)

Shipyard Dhaka is a place located on Buriganga River, in Old Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan (East Pakistan) until 1971. After a war of liberation it becomes an independent country.

Here exact position on the map:

Shipyard Dhaka is a place where vessels and oil tankers are dismantle and rebuilt, part by part, giving them a new life.

You can reach this place on a wooden boat from the other river side:

(thanks Matteo and Mauro for this drone pic)

Place is relative narrow, plenty of vessels, next to small houses, a sort of village where workers live.

(thanks Matteo and Mauro for this drone pic)

(burning garbage - I can't image how many poisons they breathe every day...)

Many workers are hanging on hulls, using precarious wooden scaffolding,
smoothing and sanding, without suitable protection (generally with only a pair of glass and a foulard):

Here a worker managing the oil taken inside vessels:

Injuries are common, and the work is something similar to hell, despite of this, people are great workers, tireless and often smiling!

I met a poor man, he asked me money to take a medicine for asthma (or something related to breathe), I gave to him some money and he placed his hand on my shoulder, thanking Allah...

Me taken pics (thanks Filippo):

Here the place where they pour molten bronze into molds (molds are underground, made with sand) to build the new propellers. All without protection and gloves, and with naked feet. I have been here and I can say temperature was extremely high!

After building propellers, the must balance and refine them:

Here on the street of the small village next to the shipyard. Men are dragging an heavy chains, giving the rhythm and motivation singing.

There are also many children, probably the sons of workers:

Finally, some children with a kite, I love the bright lightness of the kite against the dark black of vessel hull...

I'm praying for a better life condition for all these people.
Long life to Bangladesh!

Thanks @mauro-debettio for this wonderful and unforgettable travel!

Pictures taken with Sony Alpha 7iii and Nikon D800.

I didn't know Dhaka Shipyard was run like this. The working conditions look terrible. They look like ships sent there to be dismantled rather than repaired. !HBIT
