Lonchura atricapilla
These birds are Lonchura atricapilla, or better known as the Peking emprit. Their most striking characteristic is the jet black head, contrasting with the lower body which can be bright brown to white, depending on age and individual variation. Its body size is small, about 11 cm, and its beak is short and thick — typical of seed-eating birds.
They seemed busy looking for food, possibly eating rice grains that were starting to dry out. Occasionally they perch on a weed stalk or fence wire, chirping softly — their voice sounds like a slow, repetitive "tsip-tsip."
I noticed how these birds are very communal. They flew in unison, moving like one unified unit. This may be a strategy to avoid predators, such as eagles or rice snakes.
