Gymnopus foetidus

Gymnopus foetidus, a type of saprophytic fungus which is known to have an unpleasant odor.

This fungus grows in piles of dry leaves that have started to rot. The size is small, the hat is rather thin and the color is dark brown. The mushroom legs are also slender and rather long. If you don't pay attention, it's very easy to miss it because of its small size and color that blends with the surrounding environment.

What makes this mushroom unique is its smell - it is said to be similar to a musty smell or a bit like the aroma of a light carrion. But this smell actually has an important function for the fungus, because it can attract certain insects which help spread the spores.

I found this mushroom in the afternoon after it rained last night, so the atmosphere was still a bit damp, and sunlight was coming in little by little from between the leaves - perfect for taking photos. I took several photos with a macro lens and added a small light so that the details could be seen clearly.

Even though the smell is not pleasant, I still think this mushroom is interesting. He showed that in nature all creatures have a role, no matter how small or strange they are.
