Ego, fear of being labelled a failure, and the likes are some of the reasons why some people will rather die on a path than to retreat. I have a guy who left for Lagos and his financial situation worsened. He said he'd rather die in Lagos than come back and be seen as a joke. It takes courage to accept reality and retreat.
