Thoughts on Self-hosting
People who are technically sound and interested in maintaining their servers typically opt for self-hosting the applications they need, as well as storing their data locally. This is a new trend that is gaining momentum, and we are seeing many people move away from the cloud and store their data. I might sound a bit contradictory because the whole world is moving towards the cloud, and that too to the tech giants, but not everyone believes that tech giants like AWS or Azure will be the future.
This is one of the reasons why we still don't have all the applications in the internet fully on the cloud. Some people still hold their stuff in their own on-premises server and have no plans to take them to any of the cloud service providers. The technological change is only in moving towards cloud storage and not moving everything to big cloud companies. It is true that many tech giants provide a lot of convenience, but not everyone is willing to adopt that.
There are so many advantages in doing self-hosting, and I would like to cover some of them in this article and explain why people prefer to have things self-hosted instead of having them on cloud servers.
We own our data
The first and foremost thing is security. There are still people who believe it is better to have the money in their pockets instead of banks. That's why we still have a huge cash economy. With the help of self-hosting, we are able to get a strong grip on our data.
Learn new skills with the setup
When people try to do the setup by themselves, it is believed that they learn a lot of networking stuff and sometimes coding too, if they are too deep into self-hosting. Learning a new skill is interesting, and that can keep us very active. People have this as a hobby even though they can afford other alternative solutions.
Gain control over our digital life
We do so many things digitally, starting from browsing the internet to doing activities on the internet. With the help of self-hosting, we will be able to have some control over what goes outside and what comes inside, and this gives good control over our digital life.
Maybe save some money
Finally, with all the self-hosting setup, if we plan it properly, we might be able to save a lot of money with a lot of learning. It does improve our skills and at the same time, it makes us choose the best thing for our needs and lets us save some money. Some applications that we buy as a cloud service can be self-hosted and used for free. Image management and storage management can be an example of this.

How much does it cost you in electricity, in kwh per month? I know giving an accurate figure is going to be hard so a vague approximation would be np.
I host around 70-80 docker containers as well as a few vms on Ryzen mini pcs. All clustered with sub 3 minute fail over.
Everything is extremely fast, and the entire cluster is less than 100W w/ 2.5Gbit switches and 10Gbit backend. The cluster, the switches (4), come in at around 100W last I checked. I also have a dual 10Gbit 60TB NAS that's about 55W. I pay roughly double wattage per year, so 100W costs me about $200/yr.
Oh right - 100W is doable - 60 TB of NAS - That's a gulp
This is what I use, 3 of them in a proxmox cluster. They use about 10-12W most of the time.
Right - GMKtec - I have one of their boxes. Not that one though. It's the 60TB of storage that worries me. The chain is getting that big?
the 60TB isn't for the chain, this is my home lab setup.
I also want to upgrade to ms-01 or ms-a2 for 10gbit sfp+ (I have 10g sfp+ backbone). 12 ports $210, and sfp+ is a lot lower power than rj45 which is why I use it.
Ah ok - As it stands I have about 512GB of NAS :D
I mainly use my NAS for backups and media, it's 6 14TB drives. I also have NVME drives in for another set of docker containers, but only like 10.
What do you use for NAS?
TrueNAS and my own hardware.
Sad that all these mini pcs are not available in India. 😕
There is no one that ships there?
There are a few sites but I don't know if I can trust them. Amazon is not delivering to India. Probably I have to find someone who can buy it and bring it to India. That would then become a costly option if I have to pay customs.
I really agree with this. Self-hosting gives you more control, better security, and helps you learn new skills. It might take a bit more effort, but not having to depend on big tech companies is worth it. Plus, in the long run, it can even save money.
It is exactly like this. There are many people who do not keep their data safe and it remains only in the mobile and later when the mobile is stolen, this kind of problem occurs, they never get that data. The same thing happened to me, but now I have kept my data in a special place and this is important for all of us. Later we do not get the password.

Self hosting definitely feels empowering. It’s the right thing that we're able to take control of our own data and learn new skills, even if it takes more effort. Plus, avoiding big tech means fewer surprises for us with privacy and costs down the line.
I am really into self hosting. My cluster has around 70-80 docker containers.
If self hosting will definitely save the additional cost of expenses, I think it is much more better
While cloud services offer convenience, self-hosting empowers individuals to prioritize security, learn, and potentially save money.
