Terrible Poet

Maybe I'm a terrible poet,
And quite simply-
I just did not know it…

Nevertheless,
It shall never be said-

I did not sing like a bird
My verse to the world!

Nor that I did not play the flute for your dance,
or a dirge for your mourning…

May not be the key or beat you like…

Alas,
I shall sing to you anyway.

Home is where the heart is, they say…
May our verses help sing humanity home.

TL/DR:
Writing, especially poetic verse is an itch in my bones. It's something I'm compelled to release and if I didn't, I wouldn't be me.
Creativity is a life saver and a blessing for preserving our mental health. With that, I express my genuine gratitude for accepting me as you find me in the poetry and writing communities.

Terrible Poet is the moniker I've claimed for myself across social media. Acutely aware my verse is awkward at times, I'm continually working on improving.
In fact I self study poetry and writing a lot.

Claiming this name has been a way for me to manage my expectations on the front end.
If it fits it sticks.
When I publish I'm not expecting my post to go into orbit. Having zero expectations for my published works has eased my anxiety about sharing.

Though I still get a pit in my stomach when I hit publish, because I'm worried it will be rubbish— which is not my intention.

After choosing and self appointing this title I became aware of the others who have publicly held the title, though not by choice and by all appearances they had no cares to give about it either.
Oh dear, so there's that.
Not my intention either.
(Facepalm)

I'm not formally trained in the art of writing or poetry, but I did excel in English and Creative Writing in high school and college. It just wasn't the degree I completed, though dearly I wish it had been. I made other choices for promises of employability & steady work with a child to raise and that former profession has served me well and taught me a lot about the human condition.

Thanks for reading.✨

The prose here reminds me of Maya Angelou.

I remember reviewing all the poetry I wrote in highschool (and now, almost a decade ago!) publishing it here (and there) under the moniker "Oh Noetry". It was a great exercise in reflecting upon how I had matured as a human being in the gulf of two decades between writing it, reviewing it, and then commuting it to the blockchain.

Ah! I'd love to read "Oh Noetry"! I'm humbled by your kind words. Thank you. Maya wrote incredible verse, I can only hope mine mature into graceful presentations like hers.

I wish that HIVE had a better search function! I tried to see if they were indexed on google, and I could only find a reference to a conversation with someone else yeaaaars ago about it.

They're there... but you'd have to scroll through about eight and a half years of my posts to find them, I think. :D (Over 2000 posts!) Yikes.

Maybe improved search is something we can hope for.🤞🏼🤞🏼 Sounds like you have an expensive body of work! Have you self published or been published?
I thoroughly enjoy reading you work.✨

In terms of creative fiction - not really, apart from young writer's festivals in school.

In terms of academia, I think the university library holds a copy of my thesis. "Visions of Death" - how visual art depicts death, with a particular focus on the Pre-Raphaelites, monuments, and more contemporary phenomena (though I wrote it over a decade ago now)

In terms of video game reviews / editorials / etc - I was a staff writer for a gaming website for quite some time.

In terms of my photography, yes - my work is held in a collection or two locally, and images have been published in a real book with a ISBN and everything!

I have touched upon so many different fields in my time. I'm nothing if I'm not prolific and varied. :D

I'll be here forever! I just try to hope that I don't alienate readers with my topsy turvy range of interests. It's very much all over the place. I try to be the renaissance man, that is to say, to be competent in as many fields as possible.

I don't think you have to worry about that, certainly not with me. Your content is an opportunity for everyone to learn new things!

That poem was beautiful, and I love the message to do what you enjoy even if everyone doesn't like it!

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Yes! We should do the things we love regardless, like dancing when no ones watching. ✨

Welcome to Hive. I never knew Don Williams covered "Sing Me Back Home" as I was just familiar with the Merle Haggard version. I learned something new. Thanks!
