Abortion? Yes or no!

Early last year precisely January 2024, I was in a meeting with over a hundred students male and female inclusive. I happen to be someone who works with students a lot especially undergraduates. We go from school to school teaching and holding academic seminars with them and along the line we also get to pray for them across other areas of their lives and not just in their academics.

It’s more like a wholistic form of outreach that ministers to their spirit, soul and body. In one of those meeting like the one I am explaining above, I happen to be a major anchor of the meeting and after the academic session, I began to pray for the students and somewhere in the middle of the prayer, I stopped dead in my tracks and said. There’s a girl here, you’ve committed abortion not once, not twice and not trice, please come and meet me after the prayers.

I am not trying to sound like a spiritual giant but sometimes when I pray for people, I pick things in spirit and that was just what played out here. After the meeting, a couple of persons came to see and talk with me about some areas of their lives and so came three other girls. Well, would you imagine that I was in for a shocker of my life that evening. I said a girl but three girls came and owned to the fact that they had committed abortions. One of them had done once and was just 17 years in hundred level. The other has done three times and was 21 years. The last girl in her mid twenties has committed abortions six times.

I was bewildered, exhausted, flabbergasted and confused. How do I start addressing this issue? She’s not married. She’s just a young girl that’s been sleeping about with meaningless men and has been committing abortions for them whenever she gets pregnant cos obviously both she and the men are not ready to have children.

And then at another dilemma I encountered still in the same school was another girl who was twenty one in hundred level too told me that she has committed abortion 5 times. She said that every year since she turned 17 that she commits abortion and that year she has already carried out one before she met me. The last one was from her boyfriend who was in 2 hundred level in the university and she was in hundred level and these men are all accomplices in her abortion escapades as they are not all ready to have children.

I asked them, are you not afraid for your lives and is that not a painful process? They are all afraid for their lives and they describe the process and painful as ever but yet they’ve done it year after year. You see, I tried to bring them close and try to talk with them to make them see why they should stop and turn a new leave but after that meeting, I tried calling them to get back with them and have reasonable discussions but they never showed up. Did I condemned them? Never.

I was empathic with dealing with them and was so my concerned with their well being. I never came from that stand point go judging them even though I am not in support of abortion. I frown at it. I heard a first hand story from a married couple who got pregnant after so many years. They’ve had their children all grown up and out of the blues the wife got pregnant again. She was perturbed and didn’t want to keep the baby.

The husband too was in support but she said as she was lying down on the abortion bed in the hospital waiting for the doctor to show up, she heard a voice telling her to not kill the baby. She stood up and left the hospital and told her husband to come along and she kept the baby and till date she was grateful she did. She said the baby was a miracle baby. No one is a biological accident and everyone deserves to be given a chance to life. There maybe cases where abortions may be allowed as some countries have legalized it and everyone have their opinions about this which may differ due to religious beliefs, ethnicity and even countries but I do not support abortion.
