Technology and the balance of men and women's work |
If no one can help, then the farming family hires farm laborers to help work the land. If the workers come from neighbors/extended family, there are two options offered: their wages are paid in money or remuneration at a later date.
The wage level depends on the type of work, quantity, and skills possessed. However, if the workers come from the nuclear family, then it is given according to their contribution to agricultural activities.
The division of tasks and cooperation of farming families is usually based on the needs of activities during planting and harvesting. In this case, more men take on the role than women. Men play a role in processing agricultural land, planting and maintenance, and marketing. Meanwhile, women take on the role of harvesters because it is easier to do.
The division of roles between husband and wife in agriculture is also based on family deliberation, but the decision maker is still the man (husband). This is because the Acehnese people adhere to Islamic law.
In agricultural activities, men play a role in heavy work. While women play a role in light work. This pattern refers to habits that have become a hereditary culture in society.
Since childhood, they have seen how parents divide roles in the family, so this also becomes a reference or basis for them in dividing roles between men and women in agricultural activities.
In the household, women are key actors in realizing household food security on the grounds that food security is part of their reproductive role.
For gardening matters, the division of labor between men and women in certain cases is clearly visible. Heavy or rough work is done by men. While "light" work is taken care of by women with the help of men as well.
Rough work, for example, cutting down wild plants in the garden, digging holes, and so on. Such work requires great stamina. However, this division is not made because women are positioned as weak or lacking stamina. Such division of labor is based on the spirit of cooperation, mutual support, between husband and wife.
Women's work in the fields is also facilitated by the use of certain appropriate technologies. Usually technology is involved starting from planting preparation, sowing seeds, maintenance, to harvesting.
Men's work is also like that. To clean the weeds, for example, is no longer done manually. There are cutting/cleaning machines used. This means that it can be concluded that the involvement of technology makes the division of roles in the garden between men and women relatively balanced.[]
