An institution that preserves local traditions, culture and wisdom
As you know, in Aceh (Indonesia), there is an institution called the Aceh Customary Council (MAA). This institution exists at the provincial level, as well as in all 23 regencies and cities in Aceh.
The Wali of Nanggroe Aceh, His Excellency Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al Haythar, inaugurated the leadership of the Aceh Customary Council (MAA) for the 2021–2026 term on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in Banda Aceh.
In his remarks, the Wali emphasized that the MAA is a strategic institution, as mandated by the Aceh Governance Law (UUPA). The MAA plays a role in maintaining, developing, and preserving Acehnese customs and local wisdom.
"Acehnese customs are a spirit fused with Islamic law, becoming the identity and character of Aceh, which we must maintain with full responsibility. The existence of the Acehnese People's Association (MAA) is not merely a symbol, but a driving force for the revitalization of Acehnese customs and culture," said the Wali Nanggroe, who was present with Special Staff Dr. Muhammad Raviq and Khatibul Wali Abdullah Habusllah.
The Wali Nanggroe emphasized that customs must be present in all aspects of life, from social and economic aspects to education, including conflict resolution within the community. Traditional values, which teach balance, wisdom, and peace, are considered highly relevant in facing the challenges of the times.
He also advised the MAA management to make optimal use of their remaining term until 2026. Priority programs that impact village communities, strengthening village and mukim customary institutions, and the role of customs in resolving social disputes must be prioritized.
Furthermore, the Wali Nanggroe emphasized the importance of involving the younger generation to prevent Acehnese customs from being eroded by globalization. "The MAA must build collaboration with religious scholars, the government, and educational institutions, so that customs remain in line with Islamic law and the needs of modern society," he added.
In closing, the Wali Nanggroe reminded the Acehnese proverb: "Adat bak Poteumeureuhom, Hukom bak Syiah Kuala, Qanun bak Putroe Phang, Reusam bak laksamana."
This proverb contains the message that everything is handled by the respective institutions that have the authority.
According to him, this proverb serves as a reminder that custom, law, and leadership are three pillars that complement each other to uphold Aceh's dignity and sovereignty.
Zulfikar Idris, Head of Cooperation and Public Relations for the Wali Nanggroe, explained that the inauguration was based on Aceh Governor Decree Number 800.1.1.4/1008/2025.
The inaugurated MAA PAW board members for the 2021–2026 period include Prof. Dr. Drs. Yusri Yusuf, M.Pd (Chairman); Miftachhuddin Cut Adek, SE, M.Si (Deputy Chairperson I); Drs. Syaiba Ibrahim (Deputy Chair II); Abdul Hadi Zakaria (Chairman of Traditional Stakeholders); Drs. H.
