The use of "mature and "matured"
I smiled when I saw this topic, because, like other people, I was surprised to find out the real meaning and use of some words. It has turned out that, some words I knew about forever, the use of those was wrong and the meanings were too. I found out a lot of words used from time to time were wrong.
They were a lot so I couldn't remember all of them, but I remember the use of the words "mature" and "matured". I know that I'm not the only one who is confused about the use of these words but let's see what I discovered.
Back in SHS, a friend of mine wanted a leadership position in the Writers and Debators Society of the school. We were asked to come for vetting where she was asked various questions. When she came back, I asked her how it went and she said it was okay except for one question that she couldn't answer.
The question was about a sentence which had an error in it and she had to correct it. The error was the wrong use of the word matured. To correct it, she had to change the word from mature to matured.
That was when I realized I had been using the word wrong all along. Even know I knew then my mistakes, it wasn't until recently that I decided to check out the word and understand it very well, its use and its meaning.
Mature is an adjective which explains that someone has reached the full development of his potential.
Matured, is the past tense of this, describing the same reaching of one's full potential over time.
These two seem to have similar definitions however, their use varies.
Mature can be used to describe ideas, people or a process.
Some examples are;
She is a mature adult
The club has a mature strategy
Matured on the other hand "matured" is used to describe a process that has been developed over time.
Some examples are;
He has matured a lot since he started working here.
A matured fruit
We see here that, even though these two words mean almost the same, their use differs based on their context. ( I stand to be corrected)
Identifying when to use these words can be a bit confusing but once you get the hang of it, you're good to go.
There are lots of English words like this that are being misused.
Yeahh, good thing we keep on learning
I was also surprised when I found out this and it hasn’t even been a year
So all my life I was just misusing them and I didn’t know
And there are so many other ones
But the good thing is we live to learn
Yeah we live to
