The Right Time To Start Learning About Money

I wonder about the percentage of the people in this generation that are financial literate with the pattern or manner in which they live and spend daily. You see someone today gallivanting with a lot of money but the next week, they are broke again. This baffles me a lot and I really wish they do better.

I didn't know what it means to be a financially literate person until after I left the university and I was working on myself in all aspects. I was dealing with procrastination at that time and I had read a few books on it and a senior friend saw how I was putting effort into working on it and putting to practice all I learned, he was so impressed and started working with me.

He got me the book, "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and I started reading the book. That book was my first introduction to financial literacy. That book so much opened my eyes to some of the things I was doing wrong and some things I should never do, and the way I should go about with my finances that would not make me go broke ever again. I read and we reviewed the book together and since then, it's been from one growth journey to the other.

My growth journey was not magical the absolute truth was that it wasn't easy at all. I struggled with stopping some bad habits and staying true to the good ones but with time, continuous reminder, and learning, I didn't stop. I may have one or two set backs but I just kept going. My mum was also another person that helped me not to relent. She made sure I save first before any other thing was done from my money.

I also came across this book in one of my classes, "The Smart Money Woman" this book did wonders in my life. It touched every part of me that I was working on, it was so practical and I pictured myself in the character and worked on it with the help of the book, I can't call myself ignorant anymore. I had more than enough for growth if only I could be disciplined.

I started learning and asking questions about shares and other investment opportunity from my dad because I knew he has a lot in different banks. He explained the little he could then and encouraged me to invest which I did. I'm earning from my investments little by little. I'm not where I want to be but I have been able to reach a milestone and also able to enlighten people about financial literacy.

I think financial literacy should begin as soon as a child can differentiate between left and right. Let's say basic one. It should be included in the curriculum all through basic and high school and in the higher institution, it should be one of the compulsory courses till final year. Everyone should learn it.

I love your growth towards financial literacy and you actually made up your mind to change yourself. I have read Rich Dad and Poor Dad, also another book that opened my eyes more to saving first before anything is The Richest Man in Babylon - an interesting and practical book I would recommend if you haven’t read it yet.

Financial literacy should be taught children at early age, particularly when they are able to differentiate between their right and left.

I heard about that book but I haven't had time for it.
I should check it out this weekend.
Thank you

Books and materials are definitely a great source of learning about financial literacy. I came across the book "Rich dad poor dad" after I read a book by Brian Tracy "No excuse". Some of the quotes were illustrated in the book, so I was tempted to read it. The earlier a child learns about financial literacy, the earlier they have control over their lives.
