Isnotu y San José Gregorio Hernández

This year, I had the opportunity to visit Isnotú and several towns in the state of Trujillo, in western Venezuela.

Este año tuve la oportunidad de conocer Isnotú y algunas localidades del estado Trujillo, al occidente de Venezuela.

Although Isnotú is a small town near the city of Valera—which serves as the region’s economic hub—it holds broad recognition and deep significance for Venezuelans, as it is the birthplace of Saint José Gregorio Hernández, recently canonized by the Catholic Church.

Aunque Isnotú es un pequeño pueblo cercano a la ciudad de Valera, que funge como centro económico de la región, es un lugar con amplio reconocimiento y profunda significancia para el pueblo venezolano, ya que es el pueblo natal del recientemente santificado por la Iglesia católica, nuestro San José Gregorio Hernández.

He is likely the most popular religious figure in Venezuelan Catholicism, having passed away in the early decades of the 20th century. After decades of widespread popular devotion, he was finally declared a saint by the Catholic Church this year, 2025.

Él, probablemente sea la figura religiosa más popular del catolicismo en Venezuela, falleció en las primeras décadas del siglo XX y, tras décadas de devoción popular, por fin alcanzó su estatus de santo para la institución católica este ano 2025.

During his lifetime, he was a distinguished physician and scientist, highly regarded by the scientific community of his time—and equally beloved by the poor in Caracas, to whom he offered free medical consultations. From the very beginning, and even before his unexpected and premature death, he had already won the hearts of the entire nation.

En vida, un médico y científico destacado y muy popular por entre la comunidad científica de la época pero también entre los pobres de Caracas, a quien les brindaba consultas gratuitas. Ganándose desde los primeros momentos y antes de su inesperada y temprana muerte el corazón de todo el pueblo.

Undoubtedly, he is the central figure of Isnotú, and his sanctuary has become a major site of religious tourism, receiving a steady stream of visitors from across the country and beyond.

Sin lugar a dudas, es la figura central de Isnotú, y su santuario se ha convertido en un importante punto de turismo religioso que recibe constantemente visitantes de todo el país y más allá.

Additionally, the town recently welcomed the Venezuelan muralist collective Ciudad Mural, who left a striking display of street art on the façades and walls of many homes in the historic center.

Moreover, I found the place truly pleasant: hospitable and kind people, a cool climate, and those first Andean breezes already heralding the proximity of the continent’s most important mountain range.

Por demás, me pareció un sitio muy agradable: gente hospitalaria y amable, clima fresco y esas primeras brisas andinas que ya anuncian la cercanía de la cordillera más importante de todo el continente.
