Fortín El Vigía de La Guaira
Also known as Fortín del Príncipe (Prince’s Fort), or popularly as Fortín del Zamuro (Zamuro Fort)—named after Cerro El Zamuro, the hill on which it stands—this is an early 18th-century colonial military structure, strategically located very near the Casa Guipuzcoana, the former colonial customs house. It was built to defend the vital port of La Guaira and the access route to Caracas from the frequent pirate attacks that plagued the Spanish Crown from the earliest years of the conquest.
Thanks to its privileged panoramic view over the central coastline, the fort also served an administrative function: it signaled the arrival of ships at La Guaira’s port using drums and flag signals.
Although no longer operational as a military outpost, the fort has recently been restored as a tourist site, owing to its historical significance for the region and its location within La Guaira’s historic district. Today, archaeological excavations are underway to uncover additional bastions and buried military structures.

The panoramic view is spectacular—a peaceful, pleasant spot, perfect for a late-afternoon visit, once the intensity of La Guaira’s sun has subsided.

This fort deserves the tourism recognition as it served as a watch spot for many years to protect the town from pirate and invaders. It looks perfectly historical with its galleons and firm architecture. Places that have helped shape the character of a town are deserving of wide recognition. We also have fort here in the island of Cebu named as Fort San Pedro. It has been a gem of our island as it served many purposes for centuries. It was a watch spot, a cemetery, a garden, and now a tourism spot for interested visitors who wants to experience the real history of a certain place. I hope you enjoyed your visit and look from above, which you have seen a very stunning wide ocean view. To more of this!
Yes. I completely agree with you; these places are interesting to me precisely because of their historical and architectural value, which usually have several layers of meaning. I'd love to see some photos of the fort you mentioned. I find it curious that despite the distances, we share a certain common past. Greetings from Caracas!! 🌞☺️

I’ve got zero connection with any cops, military types, or anyone else enforcing the state’s heavy hand. 🖤🏴☮️
I’m just here for the history. Cheers from Caracas!
I learned a lot of unknown things. I especially liked seeing the picture of the old cannon.
