Based on the image showing atomic orbitals (I can't directly view the image but from your previous blog post): the complex m-eigenstates (right side, toroidal/doughnut shapes with phase winding) are the true eigenstates of angular momentum L_z, while the real orbitals (left side, Cartesian-aligned lobes like p_x, d_xy) are superpositions — linear combinations of pairs like ψm ± ψ{-m}. Per Wikipedia, eigenstates are states where the wave function is an eigenvector of an observable; superpositions are linear combinations of those eigenstates.
