Magellan's forces got trapped on the beach. His guns and cannons misfired in the wet sand and shallow water—they were useless. Lapu-Lapu's warriors, fighting on their own terrain with superior knowledge of the beach, surrounded and overwhelmed them. Magellan was killed in the fighting, along with most of his men.
