[PL / ENG] Stephen King, "To" / "It"

Tym razem bezczelnie posłużyłam się grafiką wygenerowaną przez Gemini, ale czyż nie jest udana? Mój egzemplarz niestety nie ma fotogenicznej okładki i tak wyszło. Jeśli więc wybaczycie mi grafikę zamiast zdjęcia, to już śpieszę przedstawić moje wrażenia po przeczytaniu tej niewątpliwie najdłuższej książki Kinga (1104 stron!).

This time, I brazenly used graphics generated by Gemini, but isn't it a success? My copy, unfortunately, doesn't have a photogenic cover, and that's how it turned out. So, if you'll forgive me for using graphics instead of photos, I'd like to share my impressions after reading what is undoubtedly King's longest book (1,104 pages!).

Wrażenia są... cóż. Spotkałam się kiedyś z opinią po przeczytaniu Kingowej "Bezsenności", że to jego wielowątkowe i wielopoziomowe bajdurzenie to nuda i że była to bardzo nudna pozycja. Kompletnie się z tym nie zgadzałam. "Bezsenność" owszem snuje się wolno, ale była dla mnie niezwykle ciekawa. Jeśli chodzi o "To", to z początku trudno mi się było się wgryźć w opisane losy poszczególnych bohaterów, z czym zwykle nie mam problemu przecież. Potem coś tam się podziało, były momenty lepsze i gorsze. Najmarniej było jednak na końcu, bo nie ukrywam: podwójny (wtedy i teraz) finał akcji w kanałach jakoś kompletnie mnie nie interesował i musiałam się po nim prześlizgnąć, żeby w ogóle skończyć tę książkę.

My impressions are... well. I once heard someone say after reading Queen's "Insomnia" that its multi-threaded, multi-level ramblings were boring and that it was a very dull book. I completely disagreed. "Insomnia" does move slowly, but I found it incredibly interesting. As for "It," at first I had a hard time getting into the characters' stories, which I usually don't have a problem with. Then things fell apart, there were better and worse moments. The worst part, however, was the ending, because I'll be honest: the double (then and now) climax of the action in the sewers didn't interest me at all, and I had to skim through it to even finish the book.

Były rzecz jasna dobre momenty. Groza klauna, uwielbiam. Nie w sposób także nie lubić Bena i całej reszty Bandy Frajerów. Oprócz stwora z koszmaru lęk wzbudzała także ekipa złowrogich chłopców, którzy lubili spuszczać Frajerom lanie, czyli Henry Bowers i reszta. Były takie momenty, które naprawdę robiły napięcie i wciągały. Ale potem następowały rozdziały, przez które ciężko było przebrnąć.

There were good moments, of course. I love the clown's terror. It's also impossible not to like Ben and the rest of the Loser Gang. Besides the nightmare creature, the crew of sinister boys who liked to beat the Losers up, Henry Bowers and the rest, were also terrifying. There were moments that were truly tense and gripping. But then came the chapters that were hard to get through.

I tym moim werdyktem jestem ogromnie zdumiona. Przeczytałam Kinga sporo i wszystko dotąd oceniałam na plus, nawet dość momentami ciężką "Mroczną Wieżę". Film "To" był dla mnie rewelką. Spodziewałam się naprawdę wiele po tej książce, która przecież jest już taką klasyką Kinga. A tu takie rozczarowanie? Może właśnie przez zbyt wielkie oczekiwania, a może po prostu siadło w zły moment. Trudno powiedzieć. Grunt, że w tym roku udało mi się zakończyć to tomiszcze i mogę dopisać ją do mojej listy książek.

And I'm utterly surprised by my verdict. I've read a lot of King and have always given everything a thumbs up, even the sometimes rather heavy "Dark Tower." The movie "It" was a revelation for me. I expected a lot from this book, which is already such a King classic. And this disappointment? Maybe it was because my expectations were too high, or maybe it just came at the wrong time. It's hard to say. The important thing is that I managed to finish this volume this year and can add it to my reading list.
