Dustin the Demonslayer
Dustin would really like to spend his evenings playing basketball but demons keep showing up in his court. He'd also really not sure how a sword this big is so light. He got the sword and magic from a demon he killed kinda by accident. It showed up while he was shooting hoops and the ball ended up down the demons gullet and it choked on it. He's also not sure why slaying a demon gave him magic but it did. And it's fun.
And now the making of! Here's the prompt from the draw-a-day design challenge.
Main Prompts (Required): Your original character must include all three:
Oversized Accessories: Design a character featuring a large hood or wrap that defines their look.
Bold Color Contrast: Use striking colors like pink, purple, or brown to create a vibrant outfit.
Confident Pose: Craft a stance or gesture, like crossed arms, to show the character’s personality.
Optional Prompts (For Fun): Add any of these if you’d like:
Unique Wraps: Add an arm wrap, scarf, or similar detail for extra flair.
Wide Pants Style: Incorporate loose, flowing pants to enhance the silhouette.
Fantasy Vibe: Mix a fantasy or medieval style with the character’s outfit.
So heres my thumbnails. I focused on the silhouette a bit and also where the flare/big I liked them all. The top right being high on my list.
So started the drawing by bringing the drawing into a larger digital canvas, and refined a few details. I decided against the the scarf. It just wasn't working for me.
From there I refined the line work until I was happy with it. The older drawing is still in the background in case I changed my mind.
From here i played with values a lot. A part of the challenge was high contrast so I tried to keep that in mind here.
Then it was time for colour. I was originally going to do pink and green, but it didn't really work. As you saw at the start I ended up going yellow and purple.
I also experimented with an indoor gym as the background.
I experimented with lighting a bit, and realized for the look I wanted I needed to have the light as the center/focus, which is why I did not keep the indoor look later.
I tried to a realistic look for the metal armour but I'm not really happy with how it turned out, except the armour on the right(on canvas) leg.
Then I added a backboard to the basketball net as well as some light.
I felt like it was starting to come togethere here.
I turned it black and white to kinda get a sense of if the values were good or not. And was pretty happy with it.
At this point I'm pretty happy with it though here the shoes and skin still need shading. I also wanted to add some details to the background.
So I added some glowing eyes with some hint of something, and made the magic in his hand brighter, and added some shading to the shoes.
Also I am stupid happy with how the hand with the magic turned out.
