Lore

The Halo mouth is a collector and deliverer of souls. Seeing one on the night of a birth or death is considered a good sign as it means a soul is either delivered timely or will not be left to linger long in the world.

Like non magical mouths they're drawn to flames, and they're connected to the candlemaker so lighting a candle in a window after a birth or death is a long held tradition.

artist notes.

I wanted to do a fairly simple design with this one and evoke the feeling of night time which I think I did. I was also originally going to have the space within the window blank/empty but decided against it. I attempted to draw a crib with a mobile to show a young child is in there.

I started with a pretty basic sketch of the side of a building.

Then moved onto adding the candle and started adding colour. The shape is inspired by the luna moth but I used the same blue as I did in midnight visitor.

Then I started doing the candle, and yes id id colour pick from the same beeswax candle that I used in The Candle Maker to create a bit of a callback to that and the lore around cnadles in general.

Then things got DARK

I love how you shaped that flame of that beeswax candle it looks real to me small details like that are sometimes hard for me to draw and may even take me several iterations.

THe mobile over the crib is a clever detail to suggest that a child might be there sleeping without actually drawing it. THe shape of the wings are beautifully executed too if I were to design those wings maybe I would end up with simple triangular or angular shapes but yours are delicate and elegant Love them so much.
