I don't think you failed on your editing. The step starts here and from your observations on this edit, you will definitely do better in the next one.

My tip: play with hue, saturation and luminance. For saturation settings be careful how you turn it up.. for your hue and luminance, look into how you play with your blue and orange, turn it both ways and see which colour effect you like more.
