The Jesuits have a saying: "Give me a child for for his first seven years and I'll give you the man."
This is the basis of the famous 7-up BBC TV series.
I've always felt 7 was a bit pre-deterministic, so perhaps 16 is a better age.
I was a precious, ambitious, over-achieving, control freak at 16. So I've mellowed a lot over the years.

I think I knew a version that says give me the child until he's 7 and he's mine for life. I don't think you come out the man at 7 (or the woman).
I think that's supposed to happen. To balance out the idealism and propensity to perfectionism. But not lose it.
