On my way to the Arles Train Station, passing where the Lions keep their Watch

avatar

To put it frankly, as I was on my way to catch my train, I wasn't really happy about leaving the city so quickly. All in all, I'd only had two real mornings to enjoy it, and even that time barely satisfied me given the sheer number of things to see that I knew I wouldn't have time to see !

There's always an element of frustration in visiting a city on the run, even if in some other ways I'd be quite dishonest to say that I hadn't already enjoyed and learnt from the little I'd been able to see.

My train last week was very early, around 9:00 am if I remember correctly. I'm not going to lie to you, in the morning, even if I'm busy around the house, I'm still used to taking my time. So 9:00 am is early ^^ ... especially if you think that I finally left the place where we were staying an hour early so that I could enjoy the narrow streets of Arles one last time on my way to the train station.

IMG_5880.JPG

IMG_5839.JPG

As someone who loves alleyways that aren't too crowded, that are almost or completely empty of people, I couldn't have been better served !

IMG_5844.JPG

Even early in the morning, I was amazed at how strong the light could already be, but fortunately it was still warm as I was pretty well loaded if I remember correctly.

IMG_5857.JPG

IMG_5856.JPG

I'll never tire of the vistas of warmly colored houses and bunches of flowers falling and streaming from balconies and windows !

IMG_5878.JPG

IMG_5879.JPG

Shadow play as I make my way through the narrow streets... still without meeting anyone.

IMG_5874 copy.jpg

A small detail of an elaborate door, probably with the initials of the master or mistress of the household. I love this type of architectural detail, and taking only this point of view into account, yes, I'm resolutely conservative ^^ !

IMG_5884.JPG

IMG_5885.JPG

Before branching off, two images that for me really symbolise the south and the atmosphere that reigns in this city where everyone greets each other as they pass in the street. It's hot and we're looking for shade, but overall, compared to Paris, the people are so friendly and welcoming !

IMG_6028.JPG

IMG_6030.JPG

Here we are at the turning point in my itinerary, the moment when I decided to follow the banks of the Rhône rather than stay in the old town. I confess, I was taking too many pictures and I think that at this rate, I would have ended up missing my train !

IMG_6034.JPG

IMG_6027.jpg

But that didn't stop me from taking pictures, as the quays were dotted with architectural marvels and ancient buildings. In the first image, you can see a fortified structure, and in the second, a church like the ones you see in Italy, which reminds me of others I came across in Corsica.

IMG_6031.JPG

IMG_6033.jpg

The road continues northwards, against the current, and I come across these Roman ruins, known as the Capitol. Unfortunately, no matter how far upstream I went, time only flowed in one direction and I had to abandon the idea of exploring this place a little further...

IMG_6035.JPG

We're already facing the river and if you squint (a lot) you can already see the two lions guarding this ancient bridge.

Can you see them ?

IMG_6036.JPG

And here, behind this river cruise boat, can you make them out ?

IMG_6038.jpg

Well, no more games, here are these magnificent stone felines guarding the entrance to the Lunel railway bridge. In operation since 1868, the railway line carried by the bridge remained active until it was destroyed by bombing in 1944.

Here is an archive image of the bridge which, after centuries of boat bridges and various ferries, was the first fixed structure to be built across the Rhône river. It marks the arrival of the railway in Arles, as well as the industrial exploitation of coal in the Cévennes region.

Le_pont_des_Lions_bombardé.jpeg

And here, the bridge just after it was bombed...

IMG_6039.jpg

It's a shame, but fortunately we have archive footage to give us an idea of what the bridge looked like, and above all, we still have the two pairs of lions standing guard on either side of the river. These were restored in 2008.

After all, how could Arles have let this figure of the "lion of Arles", the most monumental to be seen in the city, fall into ruin ?

IMG_6042.jpg

After this discovery, and once on the train, I said to myself that I would come back to Arles as soon as possible, where like everywhere else, I still have a lot to discover !

I hope you've enjoyed this article, and thank you for taking the time to visit with me. Have a great day, and I'll see you soon,

<3

@anttn

All these images are mine and were taken with my phone's camera... even if I would have preferred my camera !

<3

The place looks cool though I was curious, are those buildings are apartments? As they have the same paint colors.

Sincerely, I'm anything but a "city guy". Give my a tiny village or even a lonely hut in the woods or up in the mountains and you'll have me content and happy. 😉
Neverthelsess, you taking us with you on that tour was a nice thing. And finding such historical monuments like these lions pn the former bridge head is always a pleasure! Even more if there were some pictures from the past available when the structure was still in good shape. I do like historical and lost places. It's so much fun to explore them and trying to imagine what these places may have been like back in their time.
So, a big hug and thaks to you for taking us with you! 😍
Take care!

Hi there @aaskablackwolf :)

Sincerely, I'm anything but a "city guy". Give my a tiny village or even a lonely hut in the woods or up in the mountains and you'll have me content and happy. 😉

I couldn't agree more, I vote for that plan... except that I'm a city guy that thought he would have succeed to escape sooner 😂 Now thing are coming in the right direction, but well... took almost ten years !

I'm glad you enjoyed this city tour and of course, the pleasant thing about this place is that it's about 100x smaller than Paris ^^ !

Thank you, I hope you're doing good, take care as well dear 🌻

Everything's fine as long as you know what you want. 😉

Sure that place was much less crowded than Paris. 🤣 Would be somewhat crazy if not...

I'm doing fine so far, thanks. Just being on a business trip to eastern Germany and had a good time here. Now I'm waiting for my overnight bus back home.
I hope you're doing great as well!?

For sure, and now : I want to get out of the cities hehe :D
But with countryside house, hopefully, we'll soon !

Nice, how long did you stay in Germany ?

Here, everything is fine too, thanks ! I'm packing some stuff for a first move at the house, I must say we're quite impatient ^^

Have a lovely day @aaskablackwolf, hope too that your bus journey was not too long !

It was just one day. But with a nice dinner at an italian restaurant with some colleagues. So still quite enjoyable despite the short stay. 🤗
The trip back was quite fine with only minor delay due to some traffic jam shortly before my destination.

Oh, that sounds promising! And I do understand you being somewhat impatient. I'd be as well in your situation. 🤭 Looking forward to some more posts around your new home then! All the best for your move and with eventually living there!

Have a beautiful weekend @anttn

This is certainly a historical city, the two lions up there still overlooking the city. I love the River too, looks so calm. Arles have a lot of really nice spots for photography. But them I am happy you did not miss your train at all.
