THE MILLIPEDES

Hello, good morning everyone. One of the things I enjoy the most in my free time is gardening, I try to keep the plants in my garden free of dry leaves, especially now that the heat wave is active again and the drought is pressing. This, in order not to accumulate debris from them, and attract the attention of the numerous insects that try to make a life under the dry leaves, or simply, take shelter inside or under the pots because I do not remove them constantly.

The most common species in my garden, and that I don't chase away, apart from birds, are butterflies, bees, some species of small wasps totally black, and small green grasshoppers, nothing to do with the giant flying locust that petrifies me, hahaha.

Regarding crawlers, I am very much visited by lizards that my little dog chases me crazy until he almost knocks down my pots, several species of ants from the small ones whose sting is very painful to the big black ones that I cannot say that they sting but bite.... I don't like to have them on my plants but when I spend time without removing them, they settle in. Fortunately, we haven't been visited by bachacos for a long time, otherwise, this place would be a desert.

Other species that seek to create homes under pots or at the bottom of planters are the congorochitos, beetles, and millipedes or milfoots, and it is the latter that I am going to talk about today. Perhaps for some, their photos may not be the most attractive, but for nature lovers, and above all, for insect lovers, looking at the face and physical structure of these little animals is very interesting.

Well, I had already seen some in the garden, but these photos I am sharing with you were taken inside my house. Because part of the story of these insects is that many times they migrate to the inside of the house and stay in dark places, deposits, corners behind some objects, closets, boxes, among others.

When this happens, I return them to the garden. My kittens do not harm them, but they are curious when they appear and when they see them pass by, they touch them with their paws and immediately, they roll up.

I am going to give you a summary of what I researched on the web about millipedes.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MILLIPEDES

  • It is a species that belongs to the arthropod family, its subgenus is myriapods, and its class is diplopods.
  • They have two pairs of jointed legs in most of their body segments.
  • They are not poisonous, and although they are considered pests for plantations, they are harmless to humans.
  • They are insects that feed on decaying leaves and plants.
  • They hide in soil, gardens, and other damp places.
  • They also tend to feed on healthy plants and fruits, if they are creeping plants.
  • They can sneak into houses through cracks, windows, and cracks in doors.
  • They look like smooth-skinned, reddish-brown worms.
  • The most common can measure between 1.25 and 5.08 cm in length.
  • They move slowly and, if disturbed, will coil up.

I hope you liked this post, thank you very much for visiting my blog. Happy day.
