Today begins a new year with its blank pages, exactly 364, because we've been writing the first one since midnight. My first day of the year began with joy and tension, as is usual every year; joy for the beautiful family moments, the excitement of dinner, with those present and those far away, and tension for the effects of fireworks on my family at home, and the reports from my animal rights friends about the little animals left exposed on the street and those who escaped while the sky exploded.

My daughter accompanies me every year to welcome the new year. I can't leave the house because the family has grown, and that means more little angels to protect from fireworks. She distracted the youngest with some little boxes; hers always relaxes by sucking his thumb, hahaha. The little dog calmed down quite a bit this time thanks to the relaxing music, the TV on, and being in the air-conditioned room… that muffled the noise a bit, and he fell asleep on the bed. He only jumped a couple of times when the fireworks were launched near the house.

The old man didn't come out from under my bed for more than an hour. The special kitten took refuge under the little tree, but I had to bring him into the room because I couldn't leave him alone, and he ended up taking refuge in a bathroom. That's how we survived almost half an hour of consecutive explosions.

We had dinner early, a meal somewhere between healthy and healthy. I broke with tradition a bit to stop eating such heavy dinners, and I prepared roasted chicken, a salad without mayonnaise, and steamed plantains accompanied by hallacas. They were the star of the show. An hour after the New Year began, I said a prayer to welcome it, lighting my three Christmas candles: the one for the spirit of Christmas, the one for Christmas Eve, and the one for New Year's Eve. Then I went to sleep, because everything was already quiet and peaceful.

Here, as in thousands of Venezuelan homes, it's customary to have the typical recalentao for breakfast, which is what's left over from the previous night's dinner. It can also be lunch, depending on what time people get up. Another tradition is to prepare a sancocho for lunch, sometimes cooked over a wood fire; if not, it's prepared simply, and the one I made today was amazing. That's how the day goes, wishing everyone a "Happy New Year," mostly digitally, and resting. Maybe watching a good movie in the evening, but without any desire to go anywhere. Some people take advantage of the time and go for a walk to the river or the beach. We spent the beginning of the new year video chatting with my son and grandchildren, while simultaneously sharing dinner and enjoying the beautiful views from his apartment balcony, after the fireworks had finally stopped here.

Hoy inicia un nuevo año con sus páginas blanquitas, exactamente 364 porque la primera ya la estamos escribiendo desde la medianoche. Mi primer día del año comenzó entre alegrías y tensiones, es lo habitual cada año; alegrías por los momentos hermosos familiares, la emoción de la cena, con los presentes y los distantes, y tensos por lo que ocasiona la pirotecnia a mi manada en casa, y los reportes de mis amigos proteccionistas de los animalitos que quedaron expuestos en la calle y los que se escaparon mientras explotaban el firmamento.

Mi hija me acompaña cada año a recibir el año nuevo, yo no puedo ausentarme de la casa porque la manada ha crecido más, y eso implica más angelitos que proteger de la pirotecnia. Ella se encargó de distraer al más pequeño con unas cajitas, el de ella siempre se relaja mamando dedo, jajaja, el perrito esta vez se calmó bastante gracias a las sugerencias de la música relajante, tv prendida y el encierro en la habitación con aire acondicionado… eso opacó un poco los detonantes, y se quedó dormido en la cama, sólo saltó un par de veces cuando los cohetes los lanzaban cerca de la casa.

El viejito no salió de debajo de mi cama por más de una hora, el gatito especial se refugió debajo del arbolito pero tuve que traerlo a la habitación porque no podía dejarlo solo, y terminó refugiado en un baño. De esa manera resistimos la casi media hora de explosivos consecutivos.

Temprano cenamos, una comida entre fit y fat, rompí un poco la tradición para ya parar las cenas tan pesadas, y preparé pollo asado, ensalada sin mayonesa, y plátano al vapor acompañados de la hallaca, ella era la reina en el plato. Una hora después de partir el año, hice una oración para recibirlo encendiendo mis tres velitas de la navidad, la del espíritu de la navidad, la de nochebuena, y la de fin de año. Luego a dormir, porque ya todo estaba en silencio y paz.

Aquí se acostumbra, como en miles de hogares venezolanos, a desayunar el típico recalentao, y es lo que sobra de la cena anterior. También puede ser almuerzo, dependiendo de la hora en que se levantan. Otra tradición es preparar un sancocho para el almuerzo, a veces en leña, si no, se prepara sencillo, y el que hice hoy quedó brutal. Así transcurre el día, dando el “Felizaño” a todos, en su mayoría de forma digital, y descansando. Posiblemente alguna buena película al anochecer, pero sin ganas de salir a ningún lado. Algunos aprovechan y se van de paseo al río o a la playa. El inicio de año nuevo lo pasamos en vídeo chat con mi hijo y mis nietos, y compartiendo simultáneamente la cena y las hermosas vistas desde el balcón de su apartamento, ya después que aquí había cesado la pirotecnia.
