Blue snail in watercolor 💙
Hello, I hope you're all well. Greetings to all the lovely people who support me in all my posts. This time, I was inspired by this image because there are a lot of snails in the yard where I live, and seeing them in a large group gave me a strange feeling.
And I thought to myself, what if they were snails of another species? Then I was thinking about an idea to practice reinterpreting reality, and I remembered the snails in the yard. I decided to look for a reference on Pinterest that I had on one of my boards, and I started drawing.
Studying the image in detail, I structured the body into two parts: the shell and the body.
The shell is circular, and the body is oval. To interpret reality, it is necessary to understand how the figures are structured, to use them as a base and from there construct something different but consistent.
After establishing the structure, I added the details and shape of the snail and applied the base tones, consisting of a blue shell and a brown part, a yellow body, and purple antennae.
With watercolors, the tones should be light, as watercolor is a transparent technique that works from the lightest to the most intense.
After accentuating the bases, we apply tones to create chiaroscuro, or for those who don't quite understand the term, light and shadow, and some nuances to give the painting more shape.
It's important to keep in mind that colors don't always have to be 100% true to life; you can also adapt them to your style. I'm using the colors that, based on my imagination, I think should go there.
I begin to apply the color for the background. Most of my works have a background and I always try to give them one so that the drawing doesn't look so flat. I decided to make the background orange because I imagined the floor to be orange and also because orange is the complementary color on the color wheel.
I intensify the shadow tones, since the chiaroscuro technique tells me it has a side shadow, and to create the shadow, I intensified the orange and applied purple on top.
And here is the result. I found this experience fun, even though I don't know how to draw insects or animals, it was truly interesting.
In this exploration of reinterpreting reality, I realized that artists, including myself, almost always focus on getting the work right rather than enjoying the process.
That way, when you look at the result, you'll realize you enjoyed the experience, which is what matters when you're having fun, not the outcome.
It's also important to step out of your comfort zone from time to time and venture into uncharted territory to make the experience fresh and rewarding, enjoying the process. Thank you for joining me in this endeavor. Greetings and blessings.
