Sweet Potato and Banana Desserts With Black Grass Jelly
Today I will make a sweet snack to break the fast. I looked at the refrigerator and saw the black grass jelly stock.
Well, have you ever heard of black grass jelly? Usually this ingredient is used for a mixture of drinks that are popular in Asia such as Indonesia, China and so on.
Black grass jelly has a chewy texture. Made from a type of grass which is then thickened and becomes a jelly texture.
So we will be familiar with finding black grass jelly in desserts with other mixtures such as banana and sweet potato.
For today, I also have a supply of honey sweet potato. The honey sweet potato type is sweeter and has a softer texture. Usually it is used for sweet dishes like the one I made.
I also have ripe bananas and are suitable for mixing this dessert menu. Some time ago, I also shared this menu on this blog, but the difference is that I bought it at a local shop. While this time I will prepare this menu in my own kitchen.
So, let's start the adventure of serving popular desserts in cafes around me. Instead of buying this menu, today I made a homemade menu. 😊❤️
THE INGREDIENTS
- 100 grams of grass jelly
- 200 grams of sweet potatoes
- 4 ripe bananas
- 100 grams of brown sugar
- 65 ml of coconut milk or coconut cream
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1
My first step I cut the sweet potatoes into cubes. Soak them in water to remove the sticky sap.
Also, slice the bananas, I cut the bananas diagonally.
STEP 2
Then I cut the grass jelly into small cubes. Or according to your taste.
Then, I also thinly sliced the brown sugar so that it would dissolve more easily.
STEP 3
Boil 1 liter of water. Then, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add pieces of sweet potatoes. Boiled for about 10-15 minutes.
STEP 4
Add ripe bananas, cook for a while. Then add sliced brown sugar.
Cook until the brown sugar dissolves. Turn off the heat.
STEP 5
After the heat is turned off, add coconut milk or coconut cream. You can also use almond milk or oat milk according to your taste.
SERVING
I suggest this dish is served cold for a hot day. But for breaking the fast, I choose to serve this dish for hot dessert.
Hot dessert for a filling and comfortable breaking fast food. See you at my next recipe!

Well, it's the first time I've seen this jelly, but I'm sure it's very tasty, your homemade creation. I was also struck by the fact that sugar is like a raspadura, a sweet that is made from the juice of the sugar cane. We used to eat that as children.
Greetings, friend! 😋
Many types of brown sugar here, some from sugarcane, some from palm 😊
Greetings dear ❤️
Yeah I already tried black grass jelly, in a can. It was given to us before but I can't really remember how it taste. This dessert looks so yummy, just add boiled or steamed glutinous flour in a round shape and it will be that dessert in the Philippines called Bilo-Bilo 🤤🤤. It has coconut milk too hehe. Seeing this made me crave for it. This is surely the best hot dessert to have as a snacks.
The black grass jelly has no taste, just bland 😊 but has distinc aroma 😊
We have many similar dessert for sure 😊
This looks really good. The banana, sweet potato, brown sugar and coconut milk are known to me. I have never heard of or had black grass jelly. I will surely ask some friends about this because I'm curious of its taste. Maybe if I'm lucky I might get to try :)
That is plant based jelly, similar with "agar". You can search from Asian cuisine for sure 😊
I already asked and according to them it's available in the asian market here, hehe.
Black grass jelly was a really "plot twist" in this dessert, @anggreklestari. I didn't see that coming, haha!
It looks very interesting.
Yeah, special taste! But familiar in Indonesia especially during Ramadhan (fasting) month 😊
