What Do You Want To Do For a Lifetime?
As someone with ADHD, meaning that my mind and aspirations change every half hour, it's very challenging to decide what career pathway to choose, but I learned some tricks that made it a bit easier.
The first question I usually ask myself: is this something I want to do for a lifetime? Do I picture myself doing this when I'm 30, 40, 50, 60 years old? Is it something that has to do with a temporary interest or does it relate to something I've forever been interested in?
I believe this applies to everyone but it especially applies for people with ADHD; which is that we can only excel at things we're super interested in. This doesn't mean you couldn't be good enough in things you aren't genuinely passionate about, but it means you'd probably never be a pioneer of that thing.
Another question that I ask myself is: does it match my personality? For example, I'm very outgoing and I like to meet people and move around, so a career like programming where I sit for eight hours in front of a computer wouldn't be very pleasing, as opposed to something like public relations where your whole job is about meeting and communicating with people.
One last question that I ask is: does it bring me joy? You might disagree with this one, because joy isn't the main reason why we work, but I'd argue that's a vital factor for success. I became one of the best English tutors in my country simply because teaching English brings me joy, and as long as I'm genuinely enjoying what I'm doing, why would I stop?
I hope this was even slightly helpful, and I wish you the best of luck and success in your personal and professional life.
