To Focus Amidst Distractions

Staying focused takes discipline. The easiest thing to do in the world is get distracted, one minute you’re working on something and the next you’re doing something else entirely.

Over time, I’ve discovered a few practices that help ne remain focused and productive.

1. Setting Clear Goals For The Day: I outline my goal before the day begins. This discipline keeps me grounded and ensures that I don’t wander off track.
• I list the task I want to conplete.
• I can predict how my day is going to go and I prepare for possible distractions.
• I put away anything that could distract me and that includes my phone. Sometimes I switch to DND mode, because even one notification can break my concentration.

2. Starting Early: I’ve observed my brain is more active and alert in the early hours of the day. After setting my goals, I get to work immediately.
Starting early reduces the temptation to procrastinate. Procrastination, in my experience, is an open door way to distractions.

3. Silencing The Noise In My Head: Many people prefer quiet environments for focus. The only thing I can focus on in a quiet environment is sleep. Instead, I play soft strings or instrumentals that isn’t tied to any particular song.
This helps me drown out distracting thoughts, especially because i tend to overthink. The rythms helps me stay concentrated.

4. I Avoid Multitasking: I used to think I was good at multitasking, but I was wrong. I’ll find that at the end, I’ve just done everything halfway or the tasks are poorly done. So I’d rather be done with one before jumping to the next. I started to realize it after reading a theory online.

The attention resource theory (kahneman 1973) suggests that the brain has a limited pool of mental energy. The more tasks you juggle, the thinner your focus gets. This is why multitasking reduces performance.

These are strategies that personally work for me. I understand that focus isn’t the same for everyone. It’s important to study yourself, understand what easily distracts you and then build habits that counter those distractions.

Distractions can come in many forms like phones, movies or even people. But the hardest to tame are our thoughts. These thoughts could be tied to problems, emotions or just random mental noise. When you learn how to manage your thoughts, staying focused becomes easier.
