What I dreamed of being when I grew up.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Travelling back in time, some sixty years ago, to try to describe in detail my dreams of what I wanted to be when I grew up, is a difficult task for a man of my age. I remember first the group games we played, one of them being doctor. One of those mischievous days, I changed the water in the dropper and added alcohol, so when I put a drop in my cousin's eye, you can imagine the commotion.

I played teacher a lot. I immersed myself in science books and when I was in fourth grade, I perfectly visualised myself as a systems engineering student at the Central University of Venezuela. I achieved that dream, but I was only able to keep it up for two semesters, then I graduated in Pure Mathematics, with a specialisation in Numerical Analysis.
But as a child, I wanted to be the captain of an aircraft, to fly through the skies. In my imagination, I travelled countless times, but that dream could never have come true because of my visual impairment. I ended up becoming my passion... a teacher.

When I was eleven, my classmates—perhaps out of affection or mockery—called me a walking library, others called me a bookworm... But the nickname that stuck for many years, even into adulthood, was Mister Magoo—you know why.
