Toilet water
Since I was young (1960s and 1970s), I have witnessed how deeply held beliefs can transform over time. I clearly remember those days in the Scouts in Venezuela, when we were assured that the toilet water flowed in the opposite direction depending on the hemisphere you were in. It was one of those indisputable “truths” that we accepted without question. Today, I recognize, with humor and some amazement, that this was just a myth; the direction the water flows depends on the design of the toilet, not the location on the planet. I am impressed to think how many similar ideas influenced entire generations before being challenged by science and careful observation.

We undoubtedly live in an age where information is at our fingertips, and skepticism has ceased to be seen as disrespectful and has become an essential tool for personal growth. As Carl Sagan said, “Science is not merely a discipline of reasoning; it is, above all, a discipline of the organized investigation of ignorance.” We have allowed ourselves to explore areas that once seemed unquestionable, demystifying beliefs and promoting the common good.
However, I am aware that myths don't disappear, they only transform. Perhaps today some of us accept concepts that will be refuted in the future; it is part of human nature. The difference is that now, more than ever, we have the resources to challenge what we think we know—and the humility to accept that the truth may, once again, be in flux.

Sorry, couldn't precisely understand the myth.
When you say, "toilet water flowed in the opposite direction"; can you clarify, opposite to what? 👀
Counterclockwise. About 50 years ago, it was believed that if you were in the northern hemisphere, the toilet water would swirl clockwise (clockwise), and if you were in the southern hemisphere, the water (swirl) would swirl counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise). But this has been proven not to be the case.
LOL, interesting! But how does it matter which way the water swirls? 😅
In my place, 50 years back, we didn't had toilets where water could swirl in any direction (and trust me, I don't live on Equator). 😂
Well, nice to meet you... First, let's say you woke up in an unfamiliar place and wanted to know, say, what hemisphere you were in. Just by looking at the swirling water, I could infer that you were north or south of the equator. Not just in the toilets.
In the survival courses we did in the 1870s, we were also taught, for example, that the green moss that grows on tree stems is usually found on the north side of trees, which is the wettest and shadiest side.
Feliz semana.
