Si bien la redecilla para el cabello, o “hair net”, tiene usos muy serios y prácticos en lugares como laboratorios o fábricas, para muchos de nosotros esa palabra evoca una imagen muy específica y casi entrañable. Inmediatamente, la mente vuela a la cultura popular estadounidense y a su figura icónica: la “Lunch Lady”.

Ese personaje casi mitológico de la cafetería escolar, con su delantal, su cucharón gigante listo para servir una porción de algo indefinido y, por supuesto, su inseparable redecilla ajustada sobre un peinado cardado. Es un estereotipo que hemos visto hasta el cansancio en películas y series, a menudo presentado con un toque de humor para representar a esa mujer de carácter fuerte, pero corazón de oro que alimenta a generaciones de estudiantes.
Lo más curioso es que este cliché ha cruzado fronteras. Yo misma lo veo aquí en Canadá. Las amables señoras que atienden la cantina en la escuela de mi hijo Matthew son la prueba viviente de ello. Ahí están, sirviendo macarrones con queso, con sus sonrisas y sus impecables redecillas, asegurándose de que ningún pelo rebelde arruine el almuerzo.
Así que, aunque la cultura pop lo convierta en una caricatura, ese accesorio tan simple es un símbolo muy real del cuidado y la higiene detrás de cada comida escolar. Un pequeño tributo a esas heroínas del comedor, tanto en la ficción como en la vida de nuestros hijos.

While the hairnet has very serious and practical uses in places like laboratories or factories, for many of us, the word conjures up a very specific and almost endearing image. Immediately, our minds turn to American popular culture and its iconic figure: the “Lunch Lady.”

That almost mythological character from the school cafeteria, with her apron, giant ladle ready to serve a portion of something indefinite, and, of course, her inseparable hairnet tightly wrapped around her bouffant hairstyle. It's a stereotype we've seen endlessly in movies and TV shows, often presented with a touch of humor to represent that strong-willed woman with a heart of gold who feeds generations of students.
The funny thing is that this cliché has crossed borders. I see it myself here in Canada. The kind ladies who run the cafeteria at my son Matthew's school are living proof of that. There they are, serving up macaroni and cheese, with their smiles and impeccable hairnets, making sure no stray hair ruins lunch.
