¡wow!

What I see beyond the image
Looking at this photo… wow! It takes me straight back to 1977, to those Math Olympiads. I remember entering the stadium and seeing that: endless rows and columns of tables and chairs, perfectly arranged. It was like a sea of people, literally 50,000 students! Every mind is a world of its own, each with their own agenda, their own preparation, dreaming of standing out.

That impeccable arrangement instantly told me how big the event was, how serious the challenge was. Every chair was someone, a mind ready to rack its brains over the problems—heads on fire—. And there I was, in one of them, incredibly nervous, but determined. I wanted to show that my public school could compete head-to-head with the most famous private schools in the country.
What the Image Makes Me Feel
But beyond the tables and the order, this image brings back memories that, I swear, almost 50 years later, still fill me with pure joy! I see myself returning home after three days of competition. I arrived with my certificate, my plaque, and my treasure: an HP scientific calculator. A real trophy for me.
And the excitement didn't end there. As soon as I opened the door... total surprise! All my family and friends were waiting for me. And on the table... a cake shaped like a calculator! Phew, you have no idea how I felt at that moment. It was their pride in my achievement.
That day, that welcome, has stayed with me. It was one of those sweet victories, you know? Not just because of the academic aspect, but because of feeling all that love, that unconditional support. The real prize wasn't the plaque or the calculator, it was the warmth of my home, the people who believed in me. That teaches you that effort, truly, is always, always worth it.
The Anecdote Behind It All
The tests, obviously, weren't a piece of cake —as we say in my homeland—. But there were moments… like a lightbulb in your head. I remember seeing a problem and, poof! In three seconds, I already had the answer. It was a simple 1. Later, talking with other classmates, I realized that no one else had solved it. No one! That small personal victory, amidst 50,000 answers, made me feel that, maybe, I had something to do there, that it wasn't just filler.
When we moved on to the next phase, the first 5,000, in the second test, something… strange happened. One exercise had five answer options, but none of them were correct. I thought about it, reviewed everything, and wrote my solution, explaining why the options were wrong. And that catapulted me! It put me on the list of finalists.
But what about the final? That last stage… never happened. Never. You're left wondering... one thinks the wrong way, right? Maybe they didn't want someone from a public institution to beat the other four from the private schools? Who knows what happened behind them.
But the truth is, I knew why I'd gotten there: because of me, because of my effort, because of my passion for math. And although that competition didn't end the way I'd dreamed, the true victory was already within me. It became crystal clear to me that knowledge has no surname, it's not a matter of social class. Talent comes from wherever it comes from. And yes, public education, with desire and dedication, also creates brilliant minds!
