“¡Exacto, muchacho! Lo has pillado”.

The apprentice

The afternoon sun filtered through the dusty skylights of the ‘El Perno Dorado’ workshop, illuminating dust particles that danced in the air thick with the smell of oil and metal. Don Anselmo, a mechanic with weathered hands and the wisdom of decades among engines, watched Mateo, his young apprentice, as he swept with more enthusiasm than skill.

AISTUDIO

‘Mateo, leave that for a moment and come over here,’ Don Anselmo called in a raspy but friendly voice. He pointed to a piece of metal pipe on the workbench. ‘I need you to measure that, the outside diameter of each pipe.’

Mateo nodded, a little nervously. Don Anselmo held out a shiny, complex metal instrument: a vernier caliper. ‘With this,’ he said.

The young man took it carefully. He had seen Don Anselmo use it a thousand times, but he had never handled it himself. ‘How... how do I do it, Don Anselmo?’

‘Look,’ the veteran explained, stepping closer. ‘Open these big jaws, see? Put them around the pipe, make good contact, but not too tight. Then look at the main ruler for the whole millimetres and look on the vernier, this movable ruler, for the line that matches perfectly with one on the main ruler. That will give you the decimals.

Matthew followed the instructions with concentration, his eyes moving between the scales. ‘I think... 25.4 millimetres?’ he ventured.

Don Anselmo smiled, ‘Exactly, my boy! You got it.
That day, Mateo not only measured a pipe; he learned to use the vernier caliper, an essential tool that, from then on, would feel like an extension of his own hands in the workshop.
