Leaving home meant leaving my comfort zone

Greetings my lovely friend. Welcome to my blog, stay tuned as i take on the journey on how i left my comfort zone.

So leaving my comfort zone behind is a deliberate choice to step into the unknown, embracing uncertainty and discomfort for growth. In a society that often equates comfort with happiness, leaving comfort zone behind needs courage, resilience, and a willingness to challenge the existing conditions.

An opportunity to fulfill my dreams of career advancement and an opportunity to contribute directly to what I’ve been researching on for years came in form of a job offer in Lagos. Leaving Imo state for Lagos meant leaving my comfort zone. My whole life had always been 'Imo' one way or the other. I was born in Imo state and lived most of my life in imo. I had my education, family and friends in Imo and environs.September 2021, I left Imo and moved to Lagos.

Life in Lagos

Being a Christian, I was surprised to see that Lagos is a mixed society with churches and mosques everywhere with an amazing acceptable level of tolerance and understanding. There is the freedom to do whatever you want without being hounded.

The people are eager to assist you and will go a long way to make you feel comfortable, just like Imo people. Three years and counting, there are things that I have come to love. I marvel at how warm and receptive the people of Lagos are. For instance, I needed to get a place to make my hair and my neighbor offered to take me to a salon and she waited for to make my hair and we came back together. She was doing this and assisting me in other things till I found my way around the town.

Having served my fatherland in Ekiti, I understand basic Yoruba but it’s frustrating when you go to a public office and they start talking to you in Yoruba. When you tell them to speak English the first thing they ask is ‘how long have you lived here for?’ There’s the expectation that you should be able to speak their language when you’ve lived in the West for 3 months and above.

It could be frustrating when you have to deal with someone that neither speaks English nor pidgin. You have to resort to sign language plus the littleYoruba I can speak. A particular experience was when I enrolled for a course and one of the lecturers deliver half of his lecture in Yoruba. When you protest, he just ignores you. I had to resort to self-study. However an average person on the street is always more than willing to interpret for you.

How Lagos Has Changed Me

Lagos has had some great impacts in my life. Living here has brought me peace and healing. I’ve rediscovered myself and found every reason to want to live life. Above all, my husband so loves it here so I couldn’t ask for more but be grateful to Almighty God for this opportunity of diversity.

By leaving my comfort zone behind, I have discovered a new sense of purpose and fulfillment. I have learned to trust myself, my abilities, and my resilience. And I am empowered to create a life that's authentic, meaningful, and true to who I am.

What I Miss the Most about Home?

I miss everything about Imo. Those things we take for granted. My friends and family, my volunteering service in the church and those occasional nkobi and abacha hangout with friends. Anytime I’m in Imo, I always wish I could pause the time and maximise the stay.
Imo state would forever be home.

You see that aspect of language and how they treat people who can't speak Yoruba is one thing I don't like remembering because they will treat you like no one, leaving your comfort zone is not always easy but at least you are enjoying a little of it.

Yes it's so sad to be treated unfairly because one can't speak Yoruba. Yes leaving comfort can be tough but it's often where growth happens. Thanks for your kind words.
