More Than Just Dance and Drums: My Joyful Take on Culture and Festivals

source

They say culture is the way of life and I truly believe that. It’s not just what people wear or how they dance. It’s in the food we eat, the way we greet each other, how we pray, and the festivals we celebrate.

For me, culture is what connects us to our roots. It tells us where we come from, and it brings people together in colorful and joyful ways. It also an everlasting memories.

I’m proud to say I take part in the IFE Festival Cultural Day every year in Osun State, Nigeria. It’s always full of energy people dressed in beautiful native attires, drumming, dancing, and sharing food with smiles. You can hear “Ẹ káàárọ̀” (good morning in Yoruba) echoing from every corner.

During the festival, we eat traditional meals like amala with gbegiri and ewedu soup, and of course, pounded yam with tasty egusi. The act of prayer is also important elders pray for peace, long life, and the blessings of the land. We believe in giving thanks before we celebrate. Appreciation to us is of great value.

One thing I love about IFE Festival is how everyone feels like family, even strangers. The way we share kola nuts and pour libation for ancestors makes it all spiritual and deep, not just fun.

Now, if I could explore another culture, I would love to experience the Igbo New Yam Festival. I’ve heard so much about it the rich display of yams, colorful masquerades, and the traditional “Ibo Kwenu!” greetings. I think it would be amazing to see how they honor their harvest and offer prayers with joy and pride.

Every culture has its unique flavor literally and figuratively. It’s not about which one is more popular, but about what each one teaches us about life, respect, and togetherness, and this explain the most beautiful thing about culture (value).

To me, culture is not just a once-a-year thing. It’s a daily rhythm of life, served with food, seasoned with greetings, and danced out with joy. Everyday is a cultured day, virtuous being.

Culture is not an annual thing, it is something that's practiced in our everyday life.
