The Edelstein Dress

Victor Edelstein was a society designer who made a famous ‘Infanta’ style dress for the late Princess Diana (Infanta being the Spanish word for Princess).

It was strapless and made of purple velvet, with a tulip shaped skirt. She wore it when she sat for her official royal portrait in 1991, see below:

In 1997, shortly before she died, she auctioned the dress along with 79 other gowns, to raise money for an Aids charity.

Earlier in 2023, the dress came up for auction again, at Sotherby's New York. Sotherbys expected it to sell for $80,000-$120,000, but it sold for $604,800, the highest amount ever paid for a dress. Here is a close up look at it:
