Trees Children and Dogs
Children, dogs and plants are all living beings that need care. Which of them would you prioritize if you were asked to make a hierarchy among them? I'm sure the answers will vary depending on one's beliefs. If you ask me, I would say that children and plants are in the first place. Dogs would be in a second place.
For me it's very simple. Children are the future of the entire planet. Plants are the lungs of the present, but also of the future. Not to invest in the care of both is to definitively declare humanity dead.
Now it is time to talk about what is happening in my country with these three elements. I live in Cuba. This is a country where the government, despite having one of the poorest economies on the planet, tries to make the rest of the world believe that they can maintain first world standards.
Politicians here do not concern themselves with developing legislative actions that boost the economy and solve the problems of my fellow countrymen. They are more interested in creating bills and codes that suppose social advances, but that in reality have nothing to do with what the people want.
The Animal Welfare Law in Cuba was approved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Do you think that at that time people cared about what that meant? But okay. The point is that it served to make animal care groups happy at last, after so much fighting for it.
From there began the season of unchecked propaganda about animal care. No one remembered that trees are living things too. But not mere living beings. They are at the top of importance. That's why this law bothered me so much. So much empty propaganda to calm angry minorities, but what also needs urgent protection is left forgotten.
Over the years, I have only seen trees fall in my city. It is the same government that on several occasions, and for no apparent reason, is dedicated to kill the little shade that is left. What are they doing, don't they see that they are harming us too? Less clean air, more heat to endure, less home for birds and insects that inhabit those trees.
Don't even those animal protection groups see it either? Planting trees should be one of our priorities. It's a matter of common sense. I am not obsessed with ecological causes, but I am not blind (at least I think so).
If in my country were invested in trees, only a small part of what was invested in the Animal Welfare law, I am sure that the story right now would be different. Most likely this post would not exist. I say no more, let's move on to the other part.
Dogs and children
How is it possible that, in terms of nutrition, we take better care of dogs than children? That phenomenon happens a lot around here. And it's not that people who have dogs and children. I am referring rather to the fact that most people who have dogs take great care of their animals' nutrition. The opposite happens with most parents. Their children are fed very poorly.
And we are not talking about social status or more or less economic possibilities. We are talking about the fact that ignorance has led us to this. Generally, in Cuba, people who have purebred dogs are very overprotective of them. Hence, they do not give them anything or almost nothing that is not "natural".
On the other hand, I have had to see, even from my practice as a doctor, how parents offer countless jams to their children, or powdered soft drinks, or sausages of any kind. In some cases the economic situation forces them to do so, but in others it is pure ignorance. I don't think it is the fault of the parents themselves.
While we should all be curious about what is best for our bodies, the truth is that in practice this does not happen. So I think it is another task for the government to encourage good dietary practices, whatever it takes. Health starts with nutrition. That is a slogan that I have set for myself and I am going to use my efforts to spread it.
Let's love children, let's love plants and let's love dogs. Let's take care of them as each one requires.
