Sports and school
Did you play any sports as a student? I did.
Every afternoon, at the beginning of each school year, coaches from different sports would come looking for new disciples. My school had an Olympic-size swimming pool attached to it.
Swimming, water polo and synchronized swimming were practiced there. Since the pool belonged to the school, a subject called Sports was taught there. This consisted of the children developing themselves in some of the mentioned sports.
There was another subject called Physical Education. In it the students were given the possibility to put their bodies into movement. If my mind serves me correctly, the Sports grade influenced the Physical Education grade. In other words, if the child was good in Sport, then his grade in Physical Education would be good too. Something obvious.
My classmates and I got to play water polo. We were a team that represented the school and the district in different tournaments. Being together in the same classroom was a great advantage. There were never any fights and there was great trust between everyone.
Sadly, I don't even know what direction most of them's lives have taken. All that remains in my mind are the memories of the jokes, the games, the laughter, and the bets we would make to see who could do the laps of the pool the fastest.
Sometimes it was annoying to have to wait for classes to end before going to the pool. Even more annoying was when the teachers decided to punish us for not letting us practice, especially when they convinced the coach that it was our fault.
I played other sports like baseball, but I did it on my own. I never got to have that camaraderie that we achieved in my classroom, around Water Polo and the rest of the stuff.
Today the pool is empty. I don't think the pipes that used to feed it are any good anymore. Nothing is practiced anymore. It is sad, but nothing can be done. What can't be denied is that, thanks to the school, my love for sports blossomed.
Maybe when I have my children, the situation will be better than it is now.

It's a shame that pool is unused, like many in our country...
It always saddens me to see how they deteriorate.
